The Scottish Holstein Club held its annual Calf Show at Lanark Market on the 28th September. A great show of 50 calves and 30 Young Handlers came under the watchful eye of judge Stuart Caldwell from Ayrshire. Zoe Bryson from Lesmahagow was Champion Handler, while in reserve spot was Alison Hunter from Shotts and honourable mention was Michael Yates from Castle Douglas. The champion calf Letterkenny Explode Laurie came from Alison Hunter, while the reserve Kepculloch Goldwyn Mary was exhibited by Robert Steel, Balfron. The honourable mention, Blythbridge Aftershock Georgina was shown by Abbie Baillie and belongs to the Laird Family at Blyth Bridge. The next step is the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show which we’ll report on in the next issue.

BORDER AND LAKELAND

With 15 farms spread across the county, this year’s Summer Herds Competition filled three long days for judge Henry Cornthwaite, Garstang. The standard was high and Henry was extremely complimentary about all of the herds and individuals entered: “It was certainly a busy three days of judging and on one day alone I saw more than 1800 cattle! I have seen a lot of fantastic cattle throughout the competition and I have had some difficult decisions to make, but congratulations to all competitors, with the standard so high there were certainly no losers.” More than 50 people gathered at the Roundthorn Country Hotel, Penrith, to enjoy a beautiful evening for the prize giving. Club president Marion Holliday announced the results with sponsors Barclays Bank and Quality Liquid Feeds on hand to present the prizes and trophies.

The addition of two new classes was also a great success.
