LITTLESTAR AWARD LANCASHIRE HYB MEMBER WINS

This year’s Littlestar Award was presented during the All Britain All Breeds Calf Show to young Holstein enthusiast Jonathan Woodhouse

T

his year’s recipient of the Littlestar Award is Lancashire HYB member Jonathan Woodhouse who impressed the interview panel of HUK President Randolph Miller, Michael Dennison from Semex and non-executive director of HYB Edward Griffiths, with his passion and enthusiasm for the Holstein breed and the dairy industry.

With an interest in cows from a young age, Jonathan has benefitted from the experience and encouragement of Wilson Boow, Michael Dennison and Alison Ellwood.

In 2005, following a split in family partnership, Jonathan’s parents were milking 50 cows through a second hand 10/20 parlour. The majority of the herd was served to a beef bull with store cattle sold and cows in milk purchased to increase numbers.

With a growing passion for breeding cows and much persuasion, the Shoreline herd was established in September 2010 following a grade up process and the start of milk recording.

RIGHT Jonathan was privileged to lead Robert and Elaine Butterfield’s Ingleview Gold Doll to win grand champion at Northern Expo.

Around the same time Jonathan joined Lancashire Young Breeders Club where he has been nurtured and inspired through training days, weekend rallies and social functions and in 2011 competed in his first calf show qualifier. “This was a steep learning curve, I had no experience in the show ring and stood bottom of the line. I did make new friends and this was where my passion for showing started.”

Last year Jonathan qualified for the showmanship, as well as qualifying a calf for the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show and they finished seventh and sixth, respectively. He has enjoyed success through showing calves at summer shows locally across Lancashire and Cumbria with the highlight recently being a junior championship win at Northern Dairy Expo. Since winning the Littlestar Award, Jonathan has had further success at the Open Junior Show in Cremona finishing second overall in the junior section having picked up a first in the judging as well as second in the show preparation and showmanship.

Runners up for the Littlestar Award were Andrew Thomas, East Midlands and Dafydd Wyn Jones, North Wales.

This award is kindly sponsored by David and Beverley Bostock of Littlestar Holsteins and is presented to a Holstein Young Breeder (aged 17 years and under on 1st

January) who shows the most commitment and enthusiasm towards their club. This person should be someone who attends nearly all club events, takes part, but does not necessarily win.
