SPIRTE ROSINA ON FORM AT THE

he Welsh Dairy Show at Carmarthen saw Castellhyfryd Spirte Rosina on top form to win the Holstein championship before standing reserve interbreed. This completed a successful year for Simon and Sian Davies who own her in partnership with Kevin Thomas. Judged by David Boyd from Glaslough Holsteins, County Monaghan, she came through as the winner of the senior cow class. Commenting on his champion David said:

WELSH DAIRY SHOW T

“This is a world class cow that could go a lot further, she is so correct and for her age has great legs and a tremendous mammary. I really admired the size and scale of this cow, she caught my eye and in my mind was the champion from the moment she entered the ring.

“She is so long with a lovely bone and for her age she has a fantastic udder which gained her best udder in show.” Calved with her fifth at the end of February she has produced 15,876kg at 3.97%bf and 3.08%p in 220 days while still giving 53kg a day. This is the third time that EX95 scored Rosina has won the championship at the Weslh Dairy Show and this summer won her second interbreed championship at the Royal Welsh Show. She was reserve champion at the Livestock Event 2014 having taking breed champion there in 2012 and reserve interbreed in 2011. Standing reserve to her was Bryn and Max Davies’ third calved Davlea Goldwyn Lulu 2. Classified VG89 she is the ninth generation of VG or Ex and is out of the EX91 Davlea Leduc Lulu 2. Fresh in July and giving 50kg a day she was champion at Royal Cornwall Show 2013. “The reserve is a great cow, not as much length as the champion but she is going to mature in to a super cow.”

Max Davies’ journey from Illminster, Somerset, was definitely worthwhile when he added honourable mention to his day’s tally with the second calver winner Davlea Goldwyn Pledge 2. This March calver is classified VG87 and giving 40kg a day. She stood reserve champion two weeks previous
