Hannah Bown secured a win in the intermediate class leading Richaven Arden Papoose. This is the fourth year Hannah has competed in the showmanship for West Midlands HYB having previously finished second, fourth and fifth. She also stood reserve champion handler at the Dairy Event 2012.
She edged in front of William Wilson from Border and Lakeland and Christie Baker from South Wales.
In the senior class Alison Hunter moved in harmony with her calf to stand above Northern Ireland’s Mark Henry in second and Bob Lawrence from Lancashire in third.
Competition was very strong in the mature class and it was girl power at the top with Rebecca Channing finishing third behind Anna Stable and Stephanie Whittaker.
Team presentation and tidy lines During the weekend judging took place for the best team stand presentation and tidy lines. Border and Lakeland won both these sections as well as winning the showmanship team award for points accumulated throughout the classes. Charlotte Rose, acting general manager for Holstein UK and Sue Cope, executive director CIS, judged the stand presentation and enjoyed sampling local produce from some of the Clubs. Second to Border and Lakeland were East Midlands with South

Michael Dennison from HYB sponsors Semex had the task of judging the tidy lines. Taking second behind Border and Lakeland in this competition was Shropshire with East Midlands in third. Totalling the most points in the calf classes was the Lancashire team edging them in front to take the top team award. Winning the Dick Stapleton trophy for the most helpful young breeder throughout the weekend was Richard Bostock from the Staffordshire Club. He had been exceptionally helpful to other teams, particularly helping the Isle of Man co-ordinate calves to borrow for the weekend.
Also making a return to the calf show after an absence of 10 years were calves from Northern Ireland. Although the Club have competed during this time with calves from the mainland, this year’s journey across the water with their own calves was made worthwhile with Ards Atwood Ashlyn finishing second for the Patton family. The team also picked up two fourths with Priestland 5564 Fever Farrah and Ards Dimond Barbie. Once again HYB are very grateful to Semex for their continued support throughout the year.
