Andrew says the family are lucky to be supported by good
staff including Kate Weston and James Martin, with the farm undertaking all of its own work with the exception of maize harvesting.
“I’m keen to encourage youngsters in to the industry and we have a Reaseheath College student on placement, as well as taking a student from Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School on the farm one day a week and student vets visiting the farm as part of their training.

“Ensuring we have a keen younger generation wanting to come in to the industry is of paramount importance and is something everyone must play their part in. Holstein UK has a vital role to play here through both HYB and developing key events such as Dairy Day and the All Britain All Breeds Calf Show to provide opportunities for youngsters to get together and learn in relaxed and friendly environments,” says Andrew. “UK Dairy Day was a huge success in its first year and I’m looking forward to helping the event management team build on that success in the event’s second year.” For Andrew, he feels the Society has to position itself as a major voice within the dairy sector and work to represent the needs and views of its membership and make the members feel more a part of the organisation. “The local Holstein Clubs do a great job of engaging local members and offer tremendous ways of working with others in the industry, both locally and nationally.” Having already been a Holstein UK Trustee for five years, Andrew has spent time on the rules committee as well as being non-executive director for marketing, media and The Journal. He’s also spent time as chairman of West Derbyshire Holstein Club before it merged with the East Derbyshire Club and then chaired the joint club for a further three years. “Going forward I want to see Holstein UK be a more open and inclusive organisation that all members can feel they play an active part in,” he adds.
Holstein UK would like to welcome in the New President Elect, David Tomlinson who will take over from Randolph Miller once his term completes. Also joining the Holstein UK board of trustees are Mark Nutsford and Michael Smale, representing the North Western and Far Western areas.
What’s your favourite film? It’s Notting Hill, I’m a bit of a softie when it comes to films. What’s your favourite music? Slade and Motown classics, as well as Katherine Jenkins. Football or rugby? Football! I’m a Derby County fan, but sadly don’t have much time to attend as much as I did. What about other sports? I play golf and regularly head to Scotland with a group of friends every autumn. My handicap has been down to 11. In my younger days I also played cricket. Tell us something few people know about you? I once won the flower arranging at Derbyshire YFC County Rally! Who would be your fantasy five for a dinner party? Rory McElroy, David Gower, Eric Morecambe, John Bishop and Princess Anne. They’d all bring their unique personalities to what would be a very entertaining evening. And the meal would have to be roast beef cooked medium rare, in fact it would have to be my wife Edith doing the cooking as she cooks the best beef imaginable.
