She was described by judge David Booth
as: “A well balanced heifer with plenty of dairy quality, width through her rump, open spring of rib, she walked very well on great feet and legs.” Standing reserve to her was Carhall Brady Elizabeth 4 from Anthony Jackson and Andrew Parkinson and led by Helen Eastham for Lancashire HYB. Purchased as a baby calf from Ian Mallinson’s Carhall dispersal for 900gns, she was fourth at UK Dairy Expo, first at Great Eccleston and first and honourable mention at Lancashire qualifier. Sired by Butz-Butler Atwood Brady, she is out of a VG88 dam by Shottle and her grand dam is the National Show champion Carhall Lyster Elizabeth who is classified EX93. “This stylish, long heifer is very open ribbed and again tracked well on good feet and legs,” added David Booth. Honourable mention went to Shropshire HYB members Stephanie Whittaker and James Doherty with their November 2013- born Firstlook Aftershock Ricki. She was calf champion at the Shropshire qualifier and is out of the maximum scored second calved dam Tameside Ricki 9 who stood second at the Dairy Event and Northern Expo. James purchased Ricki 9 as a baby calf at his grand-father’s dispersal sale. The winner of the baby calf class was the February-born Wyndford Aikman August 31 led by Adam Kinvig for Isle of Man. Borrowed for the show from Wilfred Maddocks, this calf is out of a dam by
Scientific SS Dusk and is backed by a further eight generations of straight Excellent dams. Staffordshire took the win in the December and January class with Nobold Lauthority TLC Rosie from Michael Roberts and Tom Lomas. Born at the end of December, she was junior champion at Oswestry Show and reserve champion at the Staffordshire qualifier. Her dam is the EX93 Ridgefield Shottle Rosie, a maximum scored third calver that was heifer champion and reserve overall at the Great Yorkshire Show. Shottle Rosie is also dam of Drointon Million Rosie who sold for the top price of 13,000gns at the Black and White Sale 2010. Taking the red rosette in the June and July class was Border and Lakeland’s Bex Fearon with Sterndale Shadow Anna. Owned by Belle Genetics she was purchased at the Sterndale Premier Herd Sale for 5000gns and has since stood first maiden heifer at Great Yorkshire, Penrith and Westmorland Shows, junior champion at Cartmell Show and reserve champion at the Border and Lakeland qualifier. She is out of the VG86 scored heifer Sterndale Affection Anna who also stood first in her class at the All Breeds All Britain and was All Britain intermediate heifer 2012.
Showmanship
An incredibly high standard of handlers went under the observant eye of judge Jessica Hassle, who found her overall champion in the form of mature class winner Anna Stable. Commenting on her judging Jessica said: “It was a daunting task to sort out the handlers, the standard was incredibly high. However, the top handlers were the most consistent, precise and efficient at showing their calves.”
