APOT.ASIA - VIETNAM APOT.asia forum 2014

Jeremy Clark reports from the stunning Hyatt Regency Resort in Da Nang on behalf of OnBoard Hospitality

Organised by 'Happy' Keerthi Hapugasdeniya and his great team, and supported by the hospitable Heather Cho, chairman of APOT, APOT.asia 2014 was an engaging, fun and educational event, sponsored by Korean Air.

The Conference The opening address was from Mr Tran Chi Cuong, deputy director of Danang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, followed by APOT.asia chairman Heather Cho of Korean Airlines. The key speaker was Nishantha

Wickramasinghe, ceo of Sri Lankan Airlines, who gave an excellent insight into the plans for Sri Lankan and emphasised the need for closer co-operation and alliances within the region, citing in particular India, China and other more established Asian economies. “It is through working with each other, and not against, that we will all reap and share the rewards of healthier returns in the travel markets,” he said. Azman Ahmad, cco of Firefly, spoke about the challenges of customer management and how the focus has changed. Citing his recent experiences in dealing with the fall-out from MH370, he was able to explain how specific techniques like The Stockdale Paradox, which is basically learning to face up to the reality of a situation, were employed to help him through that difficult time.

Peter Von Huene-Chan, cco Gate

Gourmet, gave his take on what is going to happen up to 2020 and beyond in the airline catering sector. The presentation was notable for two key points: the video on statistics and demographics for the current period and into the future showed that India has more university degree holders than the US has children; the slightly more depressing message was that gategroup does not think much

will change in the politics of airline provisioning. It still going to be all about cutting cost. Don Chisholm, author of Have you got the guts to be really healthy? gave a presentation on healthy eating and how it is possible for airlines to be organic and healthy without it costing the earth. A very engaging talk, if not scary, it focused the mind on the need to pay more attention to what we consume and where it comes from.
