World first smart LNB Eutelsat Comms

By Ian McMurray Showcasing the latest developments in Ultra HD, new features of turnkey connected TV platforms and presenting its “smart LNB” in a world-first live demo during IBC is Eutelsat Communications. “Over the past year, we’ve moved from being Europe’s most experienced satellite provider to become a global player with worldwide coverage,” said the company’s director of commercial development and marketing, Markus Fritz. “In the 30 years since the company began operations,

“Eutelsat is now a global player with worldwide coverage,” according to Fritz

we’ve innovated constantly for our customers’ benefit – and we can claim to have achieved a very high degree of customer satisfaction.”

Boosting a battery What Caught My Eye

By Chris Forrester PAG’s ‘battery daisy chain’ concept (visible at Hall 10.C49) won high praise from BBC Studios’ Rowan de Pomerai at an IBC ‘What Caught My Eye’ session. “I wasn’t expecting to be excited by a battery product,” said de Pomerai. Nigel Gardiner, PAG’s sales

director, said they wanted to develop a high-power battery but in a modular system. “By

linking batteries together we can stack up to eight modules together, although perhaps only two or three might be mounted onto the camera. The main problem with larger batteries is transportation. The airlines have strict limits on putting Lithium- Ion batteries into hand luggage or into the hold. The limit is 100W/hour in terms of size, so by taking a chain of smaller batteries you overcome those limits. Our units are digital in that they talk to one another, despite there being no direct contact with the battery. Without this

Mini cameras with style Bradley with the new Eyeb Bradley Engineering

By David Fox Three miniature high-resolution camera heads have been introduced by Bradley Engineering. The BEHD15 mini remote HD camera, the HDC150/150SR HD MOS mini remote ball camera and the Eyeb are fully remote controlled

4-Megapixel HD mini cameras with improved low light performance for unobtrusive and remote filming. “We’re using a new sensor and lens and we major on smooth moves and controllable movement,” said company founder David Bradley. The Eyeb is a new all-in-one design with “particularly cool styling”, he claimed. The remote mini camera is an all-in-one design, with a 4-Megapixel HD MOS sensor, shooting multiple formats (SD or HD up to 1080p) with a 10:1 zoom lens and up to 99 pre-set positions for Pan, Tilt, Zoom and Focus. The BEHD15 offers HD or SD

(PAL, NTSC) up to 1080p, with SDI and analogue outputs and a 10:1 zoom lens, self-contained with an aluminium case.

The HDC150/150SR is HD/SD switchable, with PAL, NTSC, 1080i, 1080p and 720p, 10:1 zoom and 32 presets for Pan, Tilt, Zoom and Focus. 11.F41

With the launch of Europe’s first dedicated Ultra HD channel in January this year, Fritz said that Eutelsat has demonstrated how its satellites are already geared up to deliver the consumer broadcast industry’s most immersive viewing experience. Eutelsat is now taking the next step with the launch of an Ultra HD channel with HEVC encoding that will be multiplexed with the existing Quad HD signal in the same Eutelsat 10A transponder. The Eutelsat stand is also host to the first live demo of the recently announced interactive “smart LNB” that Fritz claims opens the door for broadcasters to operate their own ecosystem of linear television and connected TV services directly by satellite. 1.D59

extra functionality you could have an empty battery alongside a charged battery and the one would flow into the other.” De Pomerai highlighted the other key benefit of the PAG system, which was an intermediate power hub which could also fit onto the overall stack, and then provide output power to recharge iPhones and much of the rest of the kit being used on a remote shoot. “We have all been in the position where an over-used mobile phone has died, and here was the perfect solution. There are also sockets for radio-mic receivers. It is a user-focused design.” 10.C49

Drone-Bar offers UAV control: Mo-Sys Technologies has released a new precise remote control pan-bar with adjustable fluid feel for operating RC camera gimbals. The Drone- Bar “is a collaboration between Cartoni and Mo-Sys Technologies and is based on Cartoni fluid heads”, said Mo- Sys’ CEO Michael Geissler. The fluid damped pan-bar connects to most RC camera gimbals (FreeFly, PhotoHigher, etc) commonly used with drones or UAVs. Drones “are gaining popularity and enabling new ways of filming. Those gimbals are under drones or also hand- held like a Steadicam. In any case they need an additional camera operator, but those are now forced to use hobbyist-like radio control transmitters,” and this offers a professional alternative. He claimed that: “Some of the new breed of camera gimbal operators said: ‘finally, the missing link to the professional shoot’.” Above: Cartoni’s international sales manager, Silvia Provenzano, demonstrates the new Drone-Bar. 11.E30
