Delta forces takeover: Sensor problems meant Aaton Delta
Penelopé couldn’t fulfil the promise of its prototypes
Alchemist gold now on demand
Snell By Michael Burns
Snell is demonstrating a new approach that offers its products in software form, calling the framework Snell OnDemand. Alchemist OnDemand (Alchemist OD) software, for framerate conversion of media files, is the first of these OnDemand offerings, aiming to achieve cost savings through the use of standard IT hardware. Supporting content in
standards from QCIF to 4K UHDTV and utilising Snell’s Ph.C (phase correlation) technology, Alchemist OD converts incoming files into the
standards and formats required by customers, on their chosen deployment platform. Snell claims that Alchemist
OD provides the world’s highest-quality framerate conversion in software, addressing international programme delivery, integration of movies or adding user- generated content into content schedules.
The company is also
showcasing Alchemist Ph.C-HD LIVE at IBC, offering framerate conversion for live TV applications. Alchemist Ph.C- HD LIVE offers HD and 3Gbps conversions for 50Hz and 59Hz signals, with options available for SD, Dolby E, and enhanced timecode management. 8.B70
Aaton undergoes digital Trans-formation
Aaton Digital By David Fox
In June, Aaton was bought by Jacques Delacoux, président- directeur général of Ithaki Group, the owner of Transvideo. Aaton had to declare bankruptcy earlier in the year after first defects were found in the controller for the Dalsa sensor for its planned Delta
Penelopé camera, and then non-uniform performance from the sensors themselves became an issue. The company found itself unable to fulfil the orders it had for the otherwise already built cameras.
It is now Aaton-Digital and is
currently working on a new generation of Cantar (the X-3), its acclaimed production audio recorder, described by the company as ‘the Stradivarius of multitrack digital sound
recorders’. Thousands are currently in use worldwide, but Aaton had ceased building it a couple of years ago to the dismay of many sound recordists.
Aaton-Digital and Transvideo
are also working together in R&D and manufacturing to develop other ‘interesting new products for the motion picture industry’, including a new A- Minima-style digital documentary camera. 11.F31
