The time has come to break rules and give up traditional thinking, declares Juergen Obstfelder, senior product manager, NOAH Broadcast Solutions


The broadcast industry is facing several crucial challenges and for some players their long-term survival is at stake. Traditional broadcasters now have to compete in a radically changing environment, where many new players are taking over content production and delivery. A large number of IT-based


over-the-top (OTT) channels are now very active players in the market, serving multiple device access from PCs and notebooks to tablets and smartphones with VoD and pay-per-view services, which they are able to deliver both cost-effectively and fast. For broadcasters and media


professionals, this means having to produce more content at a faster pace, and the need for improved production efficiency, reduced costs and simplified operations. In the context of high-end live


productions, the question facing broadcasters is how technology can serve up live feeds faster and with better quality. Production on location and high quality signal source material is expensive and very often a technical challenge. Plus, IT-based technology is seen by many industry players as being limited to low and mid- end productions.


However, the technical


progress in the IT industry is changing the parameters with 100% file-based workflows, including the emergence of IP- based camera signals and the accessibility of network bandwidth to exchange high quality video between major cities. In sports, major stadiums are already fibre connected. New technologies, which are now market ready, allow the transmission of uncompressed high resolution video to and from any location, in realtime. So the advantages of IT


infrastructure and dedicated software solutions combined with best-of-breed broadcast technology will offer broadcasters the right tools for:


 Real collaborative workflow based on virtual access to content from any location in the world through connected networks.


 Remote control or access, which will soon become a commodity in our industry. We’ve already seen examples of projects where a production team has control and access to live feeds from the central broadcast centre. In the near future, all operations, regardless of the actual location, can and will be


controlled from the master studio.


 A significant cost reduction in upgrading studios to new technologies as production units will be software-driven and can easily be updated or adjusted without major investments, including accessory components.


 The option to create networked, scalable solutions and combine editing hardware situated in different studios, different rooms, different buildings and different locations.


 A more creative production process as IT-based technology allows intuitive operation and access to all available media sources and additional technologies not yet included in the hardware configuration. All signal processing will be user-defined within a software solution.


 Easier operation in the field with reduced costs, a smaller workforce and immediate availability of signals. At NOAH we see IT-based distributed live production as one of the great opportunities where the big broadcast manufacturers will compete in the future. 11.G64

Remote cameras under control

For anyone looking for a flexible architecture for a wide range of networked or stand- alone camera automation applications, Telemetrics new Remote Camera Operation System is an option. The system includes a Robotic Camera Control Panel (RCCP-1), Camera Shader Panel (CSP) and Enterprise Database Control Software (EDCS).


The new CSP is claimed to


provide a single operator with efficient control of studio operations via specially


designed control screens that emulate different manufacturers’ remote operating panels. RCCP-1 has an integrated touchscreen interface for ROP controls with an integrated joystick for trim controls (pan, tilt, zoom, etc), while the new EDCS software provides enterprise level camera control using an SQL database with configurable access control, which is claimed to provide seamless operation between multiple controllers.
