Screen break: Vietnam’s An

Vien Television is the most ambitious OBE deployment to date

AVG upgrades DTH/DTT with OBE Open Broadcast Systems By Ian McMurray

Audio Visual Global (AVG), which owns An Vien Television, has selected Open Broadcast Encoder (OBE) from Open Broadcast Systems to upgrade its DTH and DTT services. AVG uses OBE to encode its MPEG- 4/AVC direct to home satellite

In your (Fire)face RME

By Paul Watson

The powerful and rack- mountable Fireface UFX and UCX digitally controlled preamps on show from RME provide 60- and 36-channels of of audio respectively. The 30-input, 30-output

Fireface UFX boasts reference class converters and full 192kHz operation as well as ultra-low latency operation via USB and FireWire. According to RME, it’s also an extremely stable unit. Features include active jitter suppression, professional reference level support, advanced stand- alone functionality and RME's DIGICheck metering and analysis toolbox: DURec records all signals directly via the USB front port. 8.A11

Tablet TV: Digital tuner turns a tablet into a TV

Androids and TVs talk Geniatech

By Ian McMurray At least four new products have been announced by Geniatech at IBC. The ATV1800 quad core Android set-top box is claimed

by the company to combine speed and connectivity, featuring the ability to connect a smart phone or tablet. For Android tablets and phones, Geniatech is launching a digital TV tuner, while the ATV130 is a dual core device with an MHL (mobile high

definition link) option. It is powered directly by the HDMI cable and, according to the company, turns a large screen TV into an Android device. WiTV, meanwhile, uses domestic WiFi to allow live TV to be streamed to any room in a home. 5.A41a

Digigram has expanded its IQOYA family of hardware and software Audio-over-IP solutions and is presenting its new IQOYA *Mobile iPhone app, which is designed for remote field contribution. According to Digigram, the app allows any iPhone to be used as a high-quality AAC and MPEG-L2 recorder/editor IP codec; armed with just an iPhone, journalists now have the power to record audio, edit it, and then send the finished piece to the studio either as live Audio-over-IP or via FTP. All that is required aside from the IQOYA *Mobile iPhone app is an internet, 3G or WiFi connection. Digigram says this is truly professional contribution solution for setting up a full- duplex connection between a reporter and a studio. 8.C51

and digital terrestrial television services as well as for head-end contribution encoding. AVG Television’s deployment of OBE is said to be one of the largest deployments of software DVB encoders for DTH and DTT encoding. According to Open Broadcast Systems, OBE gives AVG a cost-effective

platform with unrivalled flexibility and stability which is also future-proof. AVG was also able to customise OBE to meet market-specific needs, something that OBS says is not possible with proprietary competitors. OBE allowed AVG to increase its channel portfolio, allowing greater choice for customers. 4.A61g

By Paul Watson The GS-GC5/USB is Glensound's new commentary mixer which provides a complete USB audio interface for broadcasters that require a reliable connection, reliable equipment, reliable audio quality levels, and all the facilities that are expected by news and sports reporters. The GS-GC5/USB provides

interfacing facilities for two commentators plus a spare (guest). It has three mic/phantom/line switchable inputs on XLR, with broadcast quality mic amps and Glensound’s ‘Referee’ compressor/limiter system that was developed specifically for sports broadcast inputs. Each commentator has their

own on/off and level control as well as two headphone outputs commentator: a 6.35mm jack socket for high impedance connections, and a 3.5mm jack socket for low impedance – and each

headphone amp has an additional output for the guest position. The headphone mixer has

two inputs: a mix of the incoming audio (commentators), and an audio return from the USB interface. Power is via an external plug top power supply or batteries. Glensound has included a

USB to Ethernet adaptor as many operators may already use a USB to Ethernet adaptor to have a wired link when on a broadcast. The GS-GC5/USB features an RJ 45 socket on the rear, which can be used to connect to a wired network allowing the host device to connect to the GS-GC5USB for USB audio, and the local network, via a single USB connection. The controls of the unit are

on a shallow sloping, front- facing panel rather than the sloping top panel of the original GS-GC5, which leaves a larger flat top panel and reduces required desk space to provide a more compact, neater environment for the operators, Glensound says. 8.E72
