Fischer Connectors’ UK general manager Mark Richards outlines the options available to broadcasters looking to invest in new infrastructure

Serving up sport: BT Sport’s studios are a world-class hub for ideas and talent

BT Sport kicks off

Sony By Adrian Pennington

The new studio production facility serving BT Sport's suite of channels since August 01 features a range of Sony equipment.

This includes three MVS- 7000X and five MVS-3000 switchers, fifteen HDC-2400 studio cameras, as well as the latest Sony TriMaster OLEDs rolled out across the three new studios at the facility located at Queen Elizabeth II Park Sony worked in partnership with Megahertz, systems integrator on the project, and the BT Sport project team to design and implement the facility which produces live and recorded programming for BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN. Jamie Hindhaugh, COO, BT Sport said: “At the core of our new studios build is a spirit of collaboration that brings the best of industry – and sometimes competitors – working together toward a common aim: to make the BT Sport studios a world-class hub

for the best ideas and talent. We believe talent attracts talent and our partnership with Sony as a partner has helped us to foster that mind-set.” Sony sales director, Dave Dougall commented: “Working with BT Sport gave us an exciting opportunity to help

Over the last few years, as the number of productions on location has risen, coupled with the digital TV channel explosion and the increase in online viewing, content production has seen a major technical evolution. When television production

takes place in the controlled environment of a studio, the connectivity is based upon a fixed installation. The main goal is to have steady extremely high performance connections that don’t need to be plugged and unplugged regularly. The infrastructure of broadcast on (often outdoor) location varies a lot. Cables with reliable and high performance connectors are the essential link between the production site and the OB van. At many outside television

productions the distance and number of cables needed will result in hundreds or sometimes thousands of metres of cables present onsite. Another set of cables is needed to guarantee the interface between the OB van and the satellite upstream. Somewhere along the line, they will all need a connection, and HD Triax could well be a solution. The Fischer 1051 Triax HD

Pro+ is the right selection for the connection between the camera and the production area. Already a recognised industry standard for both studio and outside broadcasting, it was awarded in 2010 an IBC Award for innovation and cost-efficiency. Long HD transmission distances are possible, in fact up to 1.5 kilometers using HD Pro+ without the need for a repeater.

HD broadcast: triax or fibre? Opinion

Mark Richards: ‘You need to have a robust connector’

Location environments are

mixed, from a controlled environment to a desert. Users will be required to shoot in extreme heat and extreme cold, as well as being on, in or under sand, mud or water. In these conditions, you need to have a robust connector during mating and un-mating. All of these conditions have

the potential to affect the condition of the signal and subsequent image acquisition. This can be done using fibre optic connectivity, but it is extremely important that the connector is easy to clean. The Fischer FiberOptic

Series, launched last November, suits these needs perfectly. One of the constraints of

broadcast on location is time. Technicians only have a short amount of time to set-up and break down. All equipment needs to be easy to use, robust and work first time. The Fischer 1051 Triax HD Pro+ is fully available and proven and most camera manufacturers have HD triax options. The Fischer FiberOptic Series is the perfect choice when fibre optics are required. 11.E31
