Active BNC to simplify connections

By David Fox The broadcast standard 75 Ohm BNC connector is now available with either a built- in cable driver or cable equaliser function, in Canare’s Active BNC. It is “a stunning illustration of miniaturisation”, said Jean Lepicard, directeur général of Canare France. It should significantly simplify designing a high performance 3G-SDI system that meets return loss specifications.


The unit is a normal BNC size and is compliant with SMPTE 424M standards. It means that broadcast signals device engineers, working on signal processing, will no longer need to spend time adjusting the discrete parts to meet SMPTE standards, which should “save time, space in the PCB, and development cost.” 11.A50


When relaxing with customers and industry colleagues, I usually try to find out not just how they stay awake during PowerPoint presentations (usual answer to this is ‘coffee’) but how they keep up with new technical developments. Up to about the turn of the century, they would almost invariably name whichever printed magazine came closest to their area of specialisation. In recent years, however, the single word ‘online’ has become a more common reply. This often means direct


newsletters from manufacturers and service providers. But by far most common response of all, among European customers, is IBC. Which is why we are here. Hiltron’s focus is on satellite


communication products, given our complementary roles as a satcom equipment manufacturer and systems integrator. This year we are introducing three additions to our product range, all designed to increase efficiency and productivity. Our new MAF 1.4 metre is a


motorised flyaway system that incorporates fully automatic satellite acquisition. Based on our established HSACU SNG antenna controller, it allows a


satellite to be found from any location at any time in less than two minutes. The MAF incorporates a


high-precision AVL antenna mount that is guided by a carrier identification algorithm. Antenna mount and controller are closely integrated. A key objective in designing


the MAF system was to provide a level of excellence not seen before in the satellite newsgathering market at such an affordable price. The antenna can be accommodated in five IATA- compliant cases comprising three for the antenna plus one each for the control electronics and high power amplifier. Our award-winning HMCS SNG management software allows fast and easy setup of the uplink without need for technical knowledge. We are also introducing at


IBC2013 what we believe to be the world’s first three-axis motorised 2.4 metre receive only Ka-band antenna with switchable linear and circular polarisation. gigahertz band which is becoming increasingly important for satellite communication downlinks. The HMAM-Ka is designed for use in commercial satellite operations. It includes professional-grade drives for azimuth and elevation plus a high-accuracy polarisation drive. The antenna is fully


compatible with our standard HACU positioning system. It can accommodate antennas of up to 3.7 metres diameter. The HMAM-IOT version enables cost-efficient uplinks to be operated via inclined-orbit satellites.

Demonstrating further refinements it has made to the tools it offers for breaking news coverage, Mosart is highlighting Newscast Automation 3.4. Claimed by the company to be the most powerful newscast


automation GUI on the market, users can now assign more advanced content sequences to shortcuts. Further functionality allows users to send such content directly to the studio walls. Mosart has also enhanced the drivers for CasperCG and ORAD graphics, as well as Studer audio ( using EmBER), and the automation system now supports an


unlimited number of video server channels. On the newsroom side, enhancements include support for Mosart commands in foreign MOS items and the ability to select the iNEWS interface as FTP or MOS.
