Driving the future of TV Anywhere
The industry must continually innovate to unify, update and deliver the TV Anywhere experience says Simon Frost, head of TV marketing, Ericsson
We live in a world where convenience is paramount – what we eat, where we shop, how we travel and how we watch TV – it’s all about the right choice for the right purpose. Intertwined with a convenience centric future is one of experience. We know, from talking to over 400 million consumers through our annual global TV consumer research programme, that the new benchmark is traditional content quality, alongside a truly successful multi-screen TV service that enables rich TV experiences, from device to service on any screen, over any network. Today’s operators and
service providers must develop a deeper understanding of consumer behaviour, learn how the elements interoperate and offer seamless, intuitive
user experiences that are tailored to each individual screen, using a unified interface design and functionality. TV Anywhere – the ability to
watch content at any time, from any location – is of paramount importance to consumers, and they are very quickly embracing new services on newly connected devices. But the experience has to be simple, giving users perceived value and choice with ease of discovery. The evolved TV service
provider is well placed to aggregate and recommend the most compelling content, and to seize the opportunities provided by the shift towards premium content intertwined with social interaction. Yet the future will be far from exclusive. The adoption of globally
connected devices is already enabling content owners to benefit from the ability to deliver content that consumers want, directly to their devices. In the race to explore and exploit this new paradigm shift we shall see changing business models and variations in existing revenue shares in the value-chain. At Ericsson, we believe
content owners, broadcasters, TV service providers and broadband providers must continually innovate to unify, update and deliver this experience across multiple
platforms to multiple screens. We are investing and bringing fresh insight and capability across product, solution and services to turn complexity into simplicity, and enable our customers to focus and drive success. If you believe in the evolved,
connected future of TV (as a TV Anywhere service), so you will hopefully recognise the critical enabler that is IP delivery. Broadcast networks, fixed broadband IP networks and increasingly high-speed mobile broadband IP networks will be essential components
Extending and encoding Matrox Graphics
By Carolyn Giardina Matrox is highlighting its Avio F125 KVM extender and the Maevex 5100 series 1080p60 video over IP encoders/ decoders. The fibre-optic KVM extenders separate dual HD video, keyboard, mouse, stereo
analogue audio and USB 2.0 devices from a workstation. According to Matrox, the transmitter/receiver pair extends two single-link DVI
(2x1920x1200) or one dual-link DVI (2560x1600 or 4096x2160) video, and multiple high-speed USB 2.0 compliant devices from the host computer by up to 400 metres over multimode cable and 4km over single-
mode cable. Avio F125 can transmit signals with zero compression and zero latency on a single duplex LC-LC fibre- optic cable. The Maevex video over IP technology enables the extension of full-HD-quality video over standard IP networks for applications including digital signage, collaborative video walls, manufacturing and automation, and process
Making intercom easy
JK Audio By Paul Watson
Outerloop, a belt pack which functions as a wireless link to an intercom system and provides connections for existing 4-pin or 5-pin intercom headsets to route
audio through a mobile device over Bluetooth, is on show from JK Audio.
Designed with ease-of-use in mind, and specifically to ‘adapt to the mixed-up intercom world’, JK Audio has developed two Outerloop models: OTL-F, which features 4- and 5-pin female XLR headset jacks; and OTL-M,
which boasts the same but in male
configuration. Both units have simple send and receive level controls and a push-on, push- off Talk button, as well as a recessed sidetone level control. According to the manufacturer, they provide “all the comforts of a standard belt pack, whether you are around
the corner or around
the world.” Outerloop also features a switch that selects between pairing to a phone or to a headset.
In Phone mode, Outerloop pairs to your cell phone, notepad, or computer just like
control. Maevex
encoders and decoders capture, stream, and decode video from a variety of sources, and allow for software- based decoding on
non-Maevex devices. Maevex units come bundled with PowerStream software, allowing for remote management of
Maevex
devices and enabling user- defined stream-management features. These include adjustable low bit-rate encoding. 7.B29
Let’s loop together: JK Audio’s new Outerloop belt pack
any other Bluetooth headset; and in Headset mode, users can pair to another Outerloop or to a standard Bluetooth headset, for a short range and secure wireless point-to-point intercom. Outerloop-to- Outerloop connections default to HD Voice (50Hz-7kHz) bandwidth. 8.E71
Simon Frost: ‘Operators and service providers
must develop a deeper
understanding of consumer behaviour’
Opinion
that are harnessed and fused together seamlessly to provide transparent delivery to the consumer. Consequently, as video
dominates the global and local networks like no other traffic, so operators and content owners have to collaborate and make these networks highly content aware and video optimised. Ericsson’s latest Mobility Report research, published in June 2013, predicts mobile data traffic will explode 12 times between 2012 and 2018, fuelled predominantly by video, and placing huge demands on capacity and the need for more efficient networks. Ericsson is uniquely placed
at the convergence of media, telecoms and ICT, building solutions and managed services to enable all those in the content chain to evolve their strategies for success. We bring a unique combination of consumer insight, multi award-winning solutions, broad array of services (including managed operations), and deep industry expertise from over 20 years as a technology and business leader. TV is a new game. It’s time to play. 1.D61
