Conference Analysis By Kate Bulkley

The director of engineering of Brazil’s largest broadcaster, TV Globo, lambasted regulators including the ITU for ignoring the needs of broadcasters in their spectrum sale plans, a fact that he says has the potential to cause “irreversible damage” to the future of the broadcasting industry. “Unless we have changes in the approach from regulators I don’t think we have a future for broadcasters,” TV Globo’s

Fernando Bittencourt told the audience at the ‘Money From Thin Air’ session about the future of broadcast spectrum. The issue for broadcasters is

around the sales by governments of scarce spectrum suitable for broadcasting high-quality services, like Ultra HD, as well as threatening the further development of DTT platforms. The fear is that governments will opt to sell the high-band spectrum, including the 700MHz band, to the highest bidder, giving the deep-pocketed telecommunications firms a big advantage.

Vera Keneham: LTE is ramping up very quickly

Europe, told the panel that he believes that collaboration between broadcasters and telcos is the best way forward, calling for both to agree to a “roadmap of action” that would include agreeing standards for receivers on chipsets across both Europe and the US so it will have enough scale to be viable. He also called for integrating “DVB thinking” into the standards plan. Vera Keneham, strategy manager for LTE Broadcast at Ericsson, added that LTE is ramping up very quickly with Qualcomm LTE chips being widely available this year.

Digital entrepreneur: His Highness Prince Fahad bin Faisal Al Saud took to the IBC stage yesterday (with The IBC Daily’s Chris Forrester) to champion the renaissance in art, culture and technology that is taking place across the Arab world and to highlight its global impact. He said: “The Middle East is a beacon of opportunity and it is here and now that we must utilise global technology, creativity and entrepreneurship. By we, I refer to 70% of the young population of our region, of whom 70% are under the age of 35 and finding a global voice.” An active entrepreneur, Prince Fahad is co-founder of the recently sold Popover Games, a multi-platform heritage games company. He is co-founder of popular app developer Appiphany Inc, which launched its debut app InstaFeed in 2013. He is also founder and CEO of Na3m (New Arabic Media), a tech-led, games-orientated creative incubator dedicated to building Arabic entertainment online.

Ticket to ride: The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus has made a stop at IBC on its inaugural tour of Europe. “It’s a really hands-on, immersive experience,” said executive director Brian Rothschild (second from right, with the Lennon Bus crew). “For many of the students it’s the first time that they can see a career path in broadcasting, and that has been the emphasis here at IBC.” On Friday, the IBC Rising Stars students made a music video with Dutch band Only Seven Left. The project supporters include Sony (which did the systems integration), Apple, Avid, NewTek and Vitec. The bus is staffed by a crew of three producer/engineers, who live on board, and includes two studio areas, robotic video cameras, a Reflecmedia chroma key area, Manfrotto’s Sky Track system for suspending lights, cameras and speakers, and an upper level Peace Deck for interviews and live music. It was designed and built by the Ketterer Truck Company in Germany.
