20 Monday 16.09.13 theibcdaily Introducing VistaMix Studer

By Paul Watson The new VistaMix automatic microphone mixing system from Studer is said to get rid of any microphone spill and background noise often heard in unscripted multi- microphone live events such as talk shows, game shows and discussion panels, which leads to decreased intelligibility and unpleasant comb filter effects (phase distortion). According to Studer,

VistaMix is the antidote to all of these problems and is presented via a software upgrade for all of the manufacturer's Vista digital mixing consoles. VistaMix removes the need for an operator to constantly manually adjust the faders, leaving the microphones of talking participants open, while closing the microphones of silent participants. Without this facility, Studer says, the reaction time of a human operator will often result in audible fade-ins of people who start talking rather unexpectedly; and changes in fader positions can quickly lead to disturbing changes of the total ambience/noise level in the mix.

Archiving with LTO XenData

By Carolyn Giardina XenData is offering an SXL range of LTO archive systems. Based on XenData’s SX-10 long-term storage appliance and LTO-6 drives or robotic LTO-6 libraries, they connect to a 1GigE network. There are five SXL models

that provide up to 57.5TB of near-line LTO and all manage externalised LTO cartridges. This includes the SXL-1, a XenData SX-10 appliance and one IBM external LTO-6 drive, priced at $10,950.

The SXL-2, which includes a XenData SX-10 appliance and two IBM external LTO-6 drives, supports automatic

VistaMix is said to mimic the action of a human operator by increasing gain for ‘talking’ mics and reducing gain for all others – but it does it very quickly and keeps the amount of total gain constant, so a clean live mix can be created. VistaMix is also designed to work for news operations: when multiple mics are installed in the studio but the desk operator is not sure which ones will be used, it switches on only those mics that are in use. In addition, VistaMix source channels may also be mix minus (N–X) owners; and

each source channel has a ‘weight’ control. This provides two possibilities: firstly, it allows the desk operator to add ‘weight’, or priority, to the main presenter such that if required he can ‘talk over’ the guests or contestants; and secondly, it allows the desk operator to give more gain in the mix to any contributors who have weak voices, or are too far from their microphones. 8.D60

simultaneous duplication of LTO cartridges and is priced at $15,950.

The SXL-8 includes a XenData SX-10 appliance and an HP 8 slot LTO autoloader

with one internal LTO-6 tape drive. It provides 17.5TB of near-line LTO capacity and supports automatic duplication of LTO cartridges. It is priced at $17,950.

The SXL-24/1 includes a XenData SX-10 appliance and an HP 24 slot LTO library with one internal LTO-6 tape drive. It provides 57.5TB of near-line LTO capacity and supports automatic duplication of LTO cartridges. It is priced at $21,950.

The SXL-24/2 includes a XenData SX-10 appliance and an HP 24 slot LTO library with two internal LTO-6 tape drives. It provides 57.5TB of near-line LTO capacity and supports automatic simultaneous duplication of LTO cartridges. It is priced at $25,950. The SXL systems write to either 2.5TB LTO-6 cartridges or 1.5TB LTO-5 cartridges using either the LTFS exchange format or the open standard TAR format. 7.H47

HDMI goes the distance

Sommer Cable By Will Strauss

Anyone needing to send HDMI signals over long distances could benefit from a new extender system introduced by

Germany’s Sommer Cable. The HICON HD-BaseT allows

a high-resolution HDMI with Ethernet signal and a 10/100 BaseT Ethernet signal, plus an infrared remote controller signal to be transmitted over distances of up to 100m. To make the extender as versatile as possible, it is compatible with HDMI standards including 1080p, 3D, 4K, ARC, HDCP, 7.1CH, Home Cinema TrueHD and DTS-HD. The infrared function transmits the remote controller signals from the receiver to the transmitter, allowing devices located there, such as Blu-ray players or set-top boxes, to be telecommanded. The receiver features a built-in 2-port Ethernet switch that allows the user to connect up to two terminal devices and integrate them into the network. The set contains one transmitter, one receiver, two power supplies and one non- wireless infrared transmitter. An optional installation cable kit is also available. 9.B31
