Predictable project deployment – combined with speed of implementation – is key to meeting today’s broadcast dynamics, says Peter Thomsen, deputy managing director, Danmon Systems Group


The viewing habits of broadcast television audiences are changing rapidly. One national broadcaster recently told me that it had experienced a 25% drop in demand for traditional television within the last year among viewers below the age of 25, who apparently have moved to other platforms. Whether this constitutes a


threat or an opportunity depends on who you are. For the television industry as a whole, competition from online services is healthy because it means higher total viewing numbers even if there is a fragmentation between nominally live transmission and catch-up streaming. Another fact is that the living-room television set has now been degraded to become the second screen. IP-based programme


distribution services are rapidly gaining popularity, but it will still be some time before programme providers are able to establish an effective income flow. New players such as content owners and entrepreneurs who have the resources to invest in infrastructure will increase in


importance over the next few years. Netflix is an interesting


example. With its streaming television network service competing against both cable and network television. Netflix added around 10% new subscribers during Q1 2013. In July it received the first Primetime Emmy Award nominations for original online- only web television. How soon will 4K UHD-TV


become a default standard as 1920x1080 HD is today? Will the implementation time be like the transition from SD to HD, and how soon will it be a factor you need to plan for? I believe the aswer is: very soon. The driving factors will be


available content, delivery services, players and screens. On-demand services are already shaping up to support 4K. Content is being produced in 4K, embedded players in smart-TVs or gaming platforms are coming soon, and screens are rapidly dropping in price. 1080-line HD looks set to dominate the television market for several years but no broadcasters should ignore UHD-TV in their forward


thinking, even if they are content now to ignore 3D. Cloud-based storage,


editing, transcoding and production – this is all now available as a service. The increasing trend of hosting TV channels as a service is another important factor to take into account.
