SUMMER CAMP GUIDE 2012 CARAVAN INFORMATION
Every year the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA provides a variety of resident camps and caravans during the summer months. These week-long adventures allow campers the opportunity to develop friendships and challenge themselves to try new things while having the time of their lives. Caravans are a great week long experience that your campers will never forget!
Our Caravan and Resident Camps are certified by the American Camping Association (ACA).
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RESIDENT CAMP AND A CARAVAN?
A resident camp is more like a “traditional” overnight camp. Campers and staff travel to one location where they stay for the whole week, participating in a variety of activities during the day, enjoying bonfires in the evening and sleeping in cabins at night. Camp Fox is currently the only Resident Camp that we travel to with our groups.
A Caravan tends to be more like a camping trip. While campers and staff do have a base camp, they travel to more than one location throughout the week. This summer’s caravans include Yosemite/Magic Mountain and High Seas Exploration.
WHAT IS A “RALLY?”
In order to be properly prepared for these adventures, there is a pre-trip rally before each caravan or resident camp. These rallies take place in the YMCA Multi-Purpose Room at 6:00 pm and typically occur the week before the trip. The meetings last approximately 30-45 minutes and serve as an opportunity to go over expectations, turn in important paperwork and to answer parent and participant questions. A detailed trip agenda is handed out during these meetings. A representative for each camper must attend these meetings.
HOW IMPORTANT ARE THE RALLIES?
Attendance is mandatory! There must be at least one parent/guardian present as well as the participant. This is a great opportunity for you to meet the other participants of the trip and to address any questions or concerns you may have with YMCA staff.
HOW DO I REGISTER?
We recommend registering early because space is limited. To register, go online to the YMCA website at
www.ecke.ymca.org, stop by the front desk at the YMCA or call 760.635.3050. Payment can be made in full at the time of registration or a $100 deposit can be made with payment in full due 12 days prior to the caravan. The $100 deposit is non-refundable.
REGISTRATION DATES
Member Registration begins Friday, March 2 at 7:00 am
Non-Member Registration begins Monday, March 5 at 7:00 am
The Credit and Refund policy for caravans is the same as regular summer camp except that a $100 deposit is non-refundable. Please review page 9 for details
MAY I SHARE A CABIN WITH MY FRIENDS?
Yes. For most of the trips that we offer, rooming situations can be arranged as long as we know well in advance. We’ll do our best, but we cannot always accommodate everyone’s requests. Remember, camp is a great opportunity to make new friends as well as strengthen old bonds.
WHO DRIVES THE CARAVAN AND RESIDENT CAMP VEHICLES?
Every driver must submit to a background check, drug and alcohol testing, a minimum of 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training, a minimum of 10 hours of classroom instruction plus First Aid and CPR training. Each driver also has years of experience driving for the YMCA.
WHO WILL BE LEADING THESE CARAVAN AND RESIDENT CAMP TRIPS?
YMCA directors, full-time staff, camp leaders and dedicated volunteers make up our leadership team for our caravan and resident camps. Each leader has been trained specifically for Caravans and meets all American Camp Association (ACA) standards. They are very excited about spending a week at camp with your children! Let the journey begin.
