FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving Back and Providing Support to Our Neighbors
COMMUNITY
At our Y, we’re more than a gym; we’re working hard to better our community by developing young people and preparing them for the future.
Each year, we run programs designed to ensure that the youth in our community have opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive. Whether it’s using the latest technology, learning to swim, or building the confidence and self-esteem to avoid drugs and gangs, we truly believe children are the future and it’s our job to help them develop the skills they will need to succeed.
That’s why we raise money each year to pay for transportation, staffing, supplies, field trips, etc – 100% of your donation goes directly to programs that support our future leaders. Want to know how?
P.E. Outreach
As school budgets get cut, recess and physical education are among the first programs to go. With childhood obesity affecting 1 in every 5 children in the U.S., we’re determined to make a difference.
We pay for 2,400 kids in 1st through 4th grades to receive physical education during the school day – and it’s more than just running around at school. At our Toby Wells and Friars Road locations, we offer access to a variety of activities including swim & gymnastics lessons, sports and dance.
And we know it’s needed – research has shown childhood obesity is most prevalent amongst poorer communities and at two of the elementary schools we partner with, 9 out of 10 children fall below the federal poverty line.
Middle School Career Luncheons At a time when unemployment is high and confidence in the future is low, we think it’s important to expose kids to as many, potential career paths as possible. That’s why we host Career Luncheons for more than 400 middle school students each year.
About once a month, we identify professionals in a variety of fields like media, law, and health/medicine to speak and have lunch with students from Mar Vista and Montgomery Middle School.
High School Programs We work with Mark Twain High School – an alternative, school-of-last-resort for most students – on two main programs:
• Wellness Program - specifically targeted to expectant teenage moms or girls who are at-risk of becoming pregnant.
• Academic Assistance – designed to bring qualified educators into the classroom to assist teachers, working in small groups or one- on-one to help students improve academic achievement.
After-School Physical Education This program offers after-school programming for students at Monarch, an accredited, non-traditional school for homeless kids in 2nd through 12th grades. This program offers children at Monarch the same recreational opportunities afforded students at traditional schools.
