SWIM ACADEMY POLICIES • Swim caps ages 3 and up.


• Swim diapers required for children 4 years of age and younger.


• No Y-Vouchers will be given unless the course is cancelled by the Y.


• If your child is unable to perform the requirements listed for the course of choice he/she will be placed in another course if available.


• No make-up courses will be offered.


Eels Ages 3 - 5 years This class is for children who are non-swimmers but are comfortable in the water. They are learning to float, paddle, and kick with support on front and back. Prerequisite: Ratio:


Pike 1:5


Rays Ages 3 - 5 years


This is an intermediate level class that focuses on independent swimming. Rays should be able to put their faces in the water and swim 5 feet on their front unassisted. Prerequisite: Ratio:


Eel 1:6


Starfish Ages 3 - 5 years This class is for the most advanced Pre-School swimmers. The class is held in the deep water. Children must be able to tread water for 1-minute, swim the front crawl, and backstroke 10 feet. Registration for this class is by invitation only. Prerequisite: Ratio:

SWIM ACADEMY - YOUTH SWIM ACADEMY - PRE-SCHOOL


Skip Ages 3 - 48 months


Babies start to become comfortable in the water and curious about blowing bubbles. Songs incorporate gestures that encourage them to scoop. The emphasis is on correct body position and progressive independent swimming. Ratio:

Pre-Pikes Age 2 years Pre-schoolers experience their first swim class without a parent. Children are assigned to classes according to their ability. Mission Valley YMCA swim instructors teach pre-schoolers to be comfortable and safe both in and around the water. All participants must wear a swim cap. Prerequisite: Ratio:

Pikes Ages 3 - 5 years This class is for children who are non-swimmers. Students learn progressive independent swimming with the assistance of an instructor. They are taught to blow bubbles, face dips, and coordinated arm and leg motions. Prerequisite: Ratio:


Age appropriate 1:5


Polliwog Ages 6 - 13 years This is a beginning swim class for students who are not confident in the deep water. Students will become more comfortable with putting their faces in the water. They will also learn proper kicks and arm motions, floating on their backs. Prerequisite: Ratio:


Age appropriate 1:6


Guppy Ages 6 - 13 years Designed for the intermediate beginner, this class is held in the deep water. Guppies need to be able to swim with their faces in the water and float comfortably on their backs. Students will be introduced to backstroke and rotary breathing. The ability to tread water for one minute is required. Prerequisite: Ratio:
