YOUTH AND GOVERNMENT MODEL LEGISLATURE AND COURT PROGRAM Teen Fun!
Debate & Public Speaking! Travel Statewide! Meet New People!
The Youth & Government program brings together 2,300+ high school students from approximately 90 locations throughout the state as delegates to discuss issues facing California and our nation. The Mission Valley Y&G delegation meets weekly from September–April to write legislative bills, plan events, learn about governmental positions, and prepare for statewide training conferences. The program climaxes in February at the State Capitol in Sacramento with the convening of the five-day Model Legislature and Court using the historic halls, chambers and offices of our State Capitol, Supreme Court, and Governor’s Office. Beyond government, Y&G fosters friendships among its participants. Conferences include dances, games, and other opportunities to build relationships that will last a lifetime. Y&G friends encourage each other to stay focused and keep in touch throughout high school and into college. This program uses the tool of a Model Legislature and Court to provide its participants with the life skills that will be used even if they decide to pursue a professional career outside of government.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS
The Model United Nations program is offered by California YMCA Youth and Government. Young people in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade called ambassadors, participate in the program with their peers. While engaged at the YMCA, they are given the opportunity to discuss international issues, discover other cultures, develop life enhancing skills, and make new friends. The four-month program culminates when Ambassadors around the state meet at the YMCA’s Annual Model United Nations Summit in Burbank, California.
Meetings will begin in January. In the spring a state-wide conference will take place. At this conference, the delegates will be learning about their assemblies’ procedures and their roles in the assemblies.
