MEET OUR SWIM COACHES


COACH ALAN has over 30 years of coaching experience, from age group and masters to professional athletes. He is well-known as the first person to successfully complete the "Triple Crown", swimming the English Channel, Catalina Channel and Manhattan Island in one year. Alan has coached some of the top tri-athletes in the world, placed swimmers at the Paralympic Games and has a gift of making swimming easy and fun to learn. He is extremely passionate about helping people from all ability and experience levels achieve their goals in the water.


COACH ALISON is a passionate coach who brings nearly 30 years of combined coaching and swimming experience. Alison is a former USA National Team member, Olympic Trials competitor and World Open Lifeguard Champion. She was selected as one of CIF San Diego's Top 50 Athletes of the First 50 Years. She was the first person of African-American descent to be elected to USA Swimming’s Board of the Directors and currently serves on the Olympic International Operations Committee.


COACH JOSE started swimming competitively at the age of 15 and has over 10 years coaching experience. He started coaching in 2001 with the City of San Diego, coaching Coronado-Navy Swim Association and Montgomery High School, and joined Mission Valley YMCA's coaching staff. Coach Jose looks forward to helping develop the young talent on the YMCA Swim Team.


COACH KYLE is the Head Coach for the Seals Swim Team. He brings over 20


years of swimming experience having competed at the NCAA Division II level at San Francisco State University. He has actively coached high school swimming and water polo since 2004. Before joining the Y in 2008. Coach Kyle emphasizes technique and has taught as a specialist at stroke clinics. Coach Kyle's specialties are distance freestyle and butterfly and still competes actively with the Mission Valley YMCA Master’s Team.


COACH MICHON is originally from Nevada and started swimming competitively at age 9 for the Reno Aquatics Club. She swam throughout high school and attended the University of San Diego on a swimming scholarship, graduating in 2010 with a BA degree in psychology and a minor in biology. “I've always loved working with children, teaching and coaching, and am passionate about helping others.” In the future Coach Michon would like to attend graduate school to pursue a career in pediatric occupational therapy.


COACH MIKE began his swimming career at age 10 in San Diego and competed both at the high school and Division I collegiate level at Mount Carmel High School and UC Irvine. He previously coached for Pacific Swim and UC Irvine Masters Swimming. His favorite fruit is a green apple!


COACH TYLER joins MVY coaching staff with many years of aquatics experience. An age group swimmer from age 6, Tyler has experience coaching swimmers of all ages. In addition, Coach Tyler served as the head coach for both the junior guard prep swim class and the


Spectrum Swim Club. Coach Tyler is presently a graduate student at San Diego State University, pursuing a degree in fiction and children’s literature.


COACH SCOTT has coached beginners swimmers all the way to olympians for over 24 years. In 2003, Scott coached and one a Division III National Championship as the head coach of the University of Redlands Woman’s Water Polo.
