Wrestling involves hand-to-hand combat and requires strength and stamina. A high power-to-weight ratio is desirable. T e sport features weight divisions, and some wrestlers “make weight” using drastic measures. Deaths have resulted through the combined use of a variety of techniques, including voluntary dehydra- tion and starvation. Rule changes have been instituted to reduce excessive weight loss, including assessing body fat at the beginning of the season, determining a minimum competitive weight, and holding weigh- ins close to the start of competition. No longer just a men’s sport, women’s wrestling became an Olympic sport in 2004, and the number of high school and collegiate female wrestlers is expected to grow.
