Measures of percent fat in athletes should be used when there are concerns about health, performance, or injury, or to help determine levels of muscle or lean tissue.
Use body composition measures as a tool to track muscle and LBM across a season. Choose the technique that will meet needs while minimizing time and discomfort.
RDNs and strength and conditioning professionals can work together to help athletes adjust LBM and percent fat, ideally during the off-se ason.
Suggest a combination of exercise and proper nutrition to help the athlete bring about the desired body composition changes to maximize performance and begin preseason in peak shape.
Keep in mind that other variables, such as muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and skill level within the sport, should be used in conjunction with body composition measures.
