Cycling is a sport of various intensities and durations, from sprinters, whose races last only seconds, to en- durance cyclists, such as Tour de France riders, who traverse more than 2,000 miles, much of it over moun- tainous terrain. Energy and nutrient needs vary according to the type of cycling (eg, track, road racing, mountain biking, and bicycle motocross [BMX]), the demands of training, and the intensity and duration of the race.
