COMMON NUTRITIONAL CONCERNS
Energy Restriction Despite the high energy demands of training, many female fi gure skaters limit energy intake in an eff ort to attain or maintain a low percentage of body fat. Weight loss must be slow, with small restrictions of energy so that muscle mass can be protected and training will not be negatively impacted.
Body Composition A low percentage of body fat, particularly for females, is considered necessary for success because of the physical demands of the sport and appearance, which is part of the subjective scoring system. T e potential for disordered eating or eating disorders is great, and early intervention is imperative.
Nutrient Intake T e consumption of nutrient-dense foods is important, especially if energy intake is restricted. Many fi g- ure skaters are children and adolescents and need adequate nutrition to support growth and development.
