COMMON NUTRITIONAL CONCERNS
Energy Restriction Despite the high energy demands of training, surveys suggest that many female gymnasts limit energy in- take. If body fat loss is an appropriate goal, it must be slow, with small restrictions of energy so that muscle mass can be protected and training will not be negatively aff ected.
Body Composition A low percentage of body fat, which may be diffi cult for females to attain or maintain, is considered neces- sary for success because of appearance and the physical demands of the sport. Amenorrhea may be present and is a warning sign associated with excessive energy restriction or anorexia. T e potential for disordered eating and eating disorders is great, and early intervention is imperative.
Nutrient Intake T e consumption of nutrient-dense foods is important, especially if energy intake is restricted. Many gym- nasts are children and adolescents and need adequate nutrition to support growth and development.
