Academic Responsibilities
In addition to being a clinician, educator, and administrator, the proficient and expert dietitian working on a college campus has a unique opportunity to serve as a teacher and academician. Te collegiate sports dietitian is oſten invited to provide guest lectures or teach a class for credit. Establishing working relation- ships with academic departments on campus can yield opportunities for sports nutrition research and publication, as well as collaborative equipment purchases, such as a BOD POD system for air displace- ment plethysmography or a dual energy x-ray absorptiometry machine for body composition analysis. Additional academic opportunities include serving as a preceptor for students in dietetics or athletic train- ing curricula, medical students in orthopedic rotations or sports medicine fellowships, and other sports medicine–related practicum experiences.
