The traditional sports that we most often associate with sports nutrition comprise a small percentage of the opportunities available. This chapter has not covered all the opportunities that exist.
Any individual or group involved in regular, organized physical activity could benefit from the expertise of a sports dietitian.
While RDNs clearly see the impact that they can make with these groups, it will take some convincing of these athletes, coaches, and organizing bodies, as well as collaborations with other health and fitness professionals who are already established in each field. The research literature on these emerging sports, as it relates to nutrition, is sparse. To make a case, RDNs should begin to collect data and ensure that guidelines are evidence-based.
Self-motivated, curious, and entrepreneurial RDNs have much to offer and gain from working with these emerging sports.
