one weight measurement does not tell the whole story. To most accurately assess progress toward one’s goal, serial weights should be taken regularly and uniformly. Regular weight checks also help an athlete keep tabs on hydration status and provide athletes with a basis for rehydration strategies.1,5 Body mass index (BMI) is not used with athletes to determine overweight or obesity status. However,
for those athletes who strive for a low body weight and a low body fat, BMI may be a necessary assess- ment measure as an indication of health status. T e World Health Organization defi nes underweight in adults as a BMI of less than 18.5, which may indicate malnutrition, presence of an eating disorder, or other health problems. In those younger than 20 years of age, underweight is defi ned as a BMI below the 5th percentile.1,5 Girth measurements provide a tool for measuring body size and proportion and for screening for
excessive abdominal fat accumulation. Although not a direct measure of body composition, measuring the girth, or circumference, at six sites is helpful in tracking change in body composition over time.1,5 Girth measurements are inexpensive and easy to take. For the most accuracy, a fl exible but inelastic tape measure is used to measure circumference, typically at the waist, hips, thighs, calves, arms, and chest. Changes in girth measurements can indicate that the current plan is working. Waist circumference is one diagnostic criterion for metabolic syndrome (see Table 11.3 on page 225).18 Body composition is an important factor in determining optimal performance weight. Accurate body
composition measurement is necessary for a comprehensive nutrition assessment because body weight is only part of the picture. T e composition of that weight is oſt en the more important part. For practical purposes, the body is divided into two major compartments: fat and lean. Body fat is either essential fat or storage fat. Essential fat, present in the heart, lungs, liver, spleen, and lipid-rich tissues of the central ner- vous system, is necessary for normal physiological functioning. In women, there is additional sex-specifi c essential fat that has biological functions for reproduction and other hormonal functions. Essential fat in women is approximately four times that of men. Storage fat is primarily in adipose tissue, including visceral fat that protects organs from trauma and fat beneath the skin. To maintain health and normal body func- tion, lower limits for body fat percentage are set at 3% for men and 12% for women. T ese lower limits are for reference only, and even the leanest athletes typically exceed these percentages of body fat.1,5 Fat-free mass (FFM) and lean body mass (LBM), although oſt en used interchangeably, are not the
same. Lean body mass contains a small percentage of non–sex-specifi c essential fat (approximately 3% of body mass), whereas fat-free mass contains no fat (FFM = body mass – fat mass). In fully hydrated, healthy adults, the main diff erence between FFM and LBM is essential fat. LBM is generally the term used in body composition measurement. T e percentage of LBM is oſt en part of equations used to deter- mine energy needs.1,5
