In a one-hour class, reduce the number of apples used and instead use more berries or frozen fruit.


Ingredients


3 large cooking apples 2 tbsp water 50 g sugar


1 small punnet raspberries/ 10 strawberries


(alternatively a selection of frozen fruit can be used)


FOR THE CRUMBLE TOPPING:


150 g plain fl our


75 g margarine/butter 50 g brown sugar 25 g porridge oats


Chopping board(s) (colour- coded), sharp knife, saucepan and lid, sieve, weighing scales, wooden spoon, mixing bowl, peeler, cutlery, pot stand, ovenproof dish/six mini ramekin dishes, oven gloves, cutlery, two large plates (for cutlery).


Method 1. HANDS, APRON, EQUIPMENT and SET UP UNIT. 2. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4.


3. Weigh and measure all ingredients. Grease the ovenproof dish or mini ramekins with a little butter/margarine.


4. Wash, peel, core and thinly slice the apples. Place them in a saucepan with the two tablespoons of water. Bring to the boil, reduce the temperature and stew for 5 mins until they are al dente.


5. Remove from the heat and stir in the sugar. 6. Pour them into the ovenproof dish/mini ramekin dishes.


7. Wash the raspberries/wash and remove the green stem of the strawberries and slice in two.


8. Place the raspberries/strawberries on top of the apple. 9. Sieve the fl our into a mixing bowl.


10. Rub in the margarine/butter until it resembles breadcrumbs. 11. Stir in the sugar and porridge oats.


12. Pour the crumble on top of the apple mixture and spread evenly. 13. Bake for 30–35 mins until the fruit crumble is golden brown.


14. Remove from the oven using oven gloves and serve with custard, whipped cream or ice cream.

TOP TIP


Many different types of fruits are suitable to use in a fruit crumble.


However, it is important to remember that if the fruit you are using is a sour fruit (e.g. gooseberries), more sugar will be needed to sweeten this dish.


Serving fruit crumble in mini ramekin dishes is ideal for special occasions.
