This unit focuses on ethical and legal issues within a computing context. The lecture discusses a range of ethical and legal issues that professionals need to consider in their work practice and the impact that these issues can have on people’s lives. It will also outline the historical sources of current practice in applying ethics in computing research. Ethical issues around access to personal data are also considered, with a focus on how these can be managed within an organization. There is also a listening text from a seminar where students discuss ethical issues in relation to artificial intelligence (AI). This aims to further develop students’ note-taking skills and skills in recognizing the speaker’s point of view. Students are given opportunities to discuss the content in groups and to further develop their seminar skills.
