including outpatient care, diagnosis and therapy. Through the study, we sought


to understand how the percentage distribution of areas occurs among the various functional sectors. Here, the methodology also included the calculation of the areas of the functional sectors, being subsequently subdivided into the following steps: l Delimitation of functional sectors (According to the Brazilian National Guideline RDC-50/2002).


l Tabulation and Interpretation of Data. l Development of conclusions.


As a way to understand the aspects that differentiate the square footage in Teaching Hospitals, a survey was made of the specific areas related to Teaching and Research aspects of the eight university hospitals included in the analysis. It was observed in these projects the existence of the following specific settings: l Teaching Islands (see Fig 5). l Study or Classrooms. l Case Discussion Rooms. l Libraries. l Auditoriums.

Analysis With the purpose of benchmarking, some professionals who are currently working exclusively with healthcare projects were consulted, and the information received was that between 15% and 35% of the estimated useful area is added to the final estimate of the total area of the building. It was also clear by their response that this percentage can vary greatly, depending on the type and specifics of a project. The study conducted in the projects provided by EBSERH observed that, at least in the initial sample, these Teaching Hospitals can be located in the highest spectrum of this percentage variation. In order to measure the actual


percentage, the projected areas of eight hospital projects prepared under the supervision of EBSERH were calculated (see Table 1). After demarcating (in blue) the useful areas measured in the projects and excluding the circulations (horizontal and vertical), as well as wall thickness, pillars, ducts and shafts of installations, it was observed that the overall average of the projects was 64% of the useful areas (in other words, approximately 34% of the gross area refer to circulations, walls and other non-usable elements). Figure 4 shows that the useful areas

were at least 56% in the case of HUGD and at most 69% in the HUC project. It is also noted that the HU-UNIFAP project, which among those analysed is the one that presents the most complete and complex functional programme,

As observed in the eight analysed projects, the teaching areas of the Federal Teaching Hospitals occupy on average 5.74% of the total building area.


Besides the educational areas, there


are other peculiarities of teaching hospitals that generate an increase in the total area: l Larger area of consultation and diagnosis, used to monitor students and residents.
