NEWS DIGEST Making Cosmetics returns in March


The 2016 cosmetic and personal care products calendar gets into full swing from 15-16 March with the fifth edition of the annual Making Cosmetics Exhibition and Seminar returning to the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, UK.


Making Cosmetics focuses on the importance of keeping up to date with technologies, techniques and concepts as well as legal and commercial developments related to making personal care products.


Boasting another comprehensive line up of technical presentations and workshops (over 70 in total) from many of the leading experts in the personal care sector, this year’s seminar programme will deliver answers and information to the questions and issues the industry faces, both now and in the future.


The exhibition is a showcase of the products, services and technologies that drive the industry, and offers the opportunity to meet with many of the leading companies operating in the sector and discuss the ways that they can benefit businesses.


Natural shield against skin stresses


Greensea, Greentech’s sister company, has launched one of the most powerful antioxidant and free radical scavengers, Astaxanthin produced by microalgae.


Greensea develops many cultures of microalgae in their own photobioreactors (PBR). More than 50,000 litres of production can be managed three times per month in their tubular and annular PBRs. The PBR allows inducing specific physiologies of microalgae and so allows the production of particular active compounds, in relation to environmental and medium culture conditions. With a collection of more than 300 species, Greensea has numerous possibilities to extract, produce and purify cosmetic active ingredients.


Astaxanthin is a well-known antioxidant that is already largely used in food and feed. In addition to its anti-inflammatory activity, its antioxidant property gives a high photoprotection capacity to the skin and a strong defence ability against pollutants and environmental stresses. Astaxanthin is a real shield against sun, pollutants and external aggressions and it stabilises skin hydration and limits the effects of ageing.


Line-up for naturals event


With its twentieth anniversary fast approaching, Natural & Organic Products Europe trade show has revealed its 2016 line-up. The event will host its biggest ever edition at ExCeL London on 17-18 April.


Running throughout the two days, the show’s extensive three-theatre seminar and demo programme is renowned for attracting a host of high-profile brands and top experts from across the natural and organic world. And 2016 continues in a similar vein.

While already confirmed names include organic pioneer and Green & Black’s founder Craig Sams; Netto UK’s Morten Møberg Nielsen; leading nutritionist Patrick Holford; Jack Challem – The Nutrition Reporter; Benjamin Brown ND, director of technical services at Viridian Nutrition; Graham Botfield, founder of Living Nutrition; The Super Foodist Rick Hay; and Natural Food Kitchen host Jay Morjaria, founder and executive chef of Sutra Kitchen (back hosting the show’s Natural Food Kitchen cooking demos).


Within the exhibition there are more feature areas than at any previous event, including the Making Waves Innovation Area, offering talks and demonstrations of the most innovative products and technologies on offer today. The Mixing Demonstrations return with Silverson Machines at the helm, giving practical demonstrations of their cutting edge shear mixing technology during the two day event, Pack Focus is the Luxury and Prestige packaging area within the exhibition, and the Solutions Centre is where the exhibiting companies offer their expertise and experience in a series of hands on technical presentations. Innovative natural solvents


unveiled in Paris Nature-inspired products have been setting the trend over the last few years as cosmetic formulators are constantly looking to expand the category in a sustainable way. Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NaDES) – a new type of natural solvents that reproduce the plants’ intracellular environment – are an innovative way to answer market demand.


Indeed, while the most active molecules are synthesised at the very core of the plant cell, some of these metabolites are not always fully soluble in water or in lipid phases. Plants may instead store and transport these compounds in a third type of liquid phase: the so-called natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES).


At Cosmetagora held in Paris in January, Naturex showcased Eutectys. This new botanical extract collection is based on a patented extraction process called Eutectigenesis, which consists of extracting the active compounds of the plant through the formation of NaDES.


Eutectys is composed of six high-definition extracts that have undergone Eutectigenesis; this breakthrough eco-extraction technology offers a natural alternative to conventional solvents and makes it possible to capture the plant cell’s most precious metabolites, in order to obtain biomimetic extracts with augmented phytoactive profiles and improved performance.


This botanical collection includes, among others, olive leaf, saffron flower, and horsetail, all well-known for their restoring and anti- ageing properties, and available for skin and hair formulations.
