Argentina Population 45.38 million
Economic and Political Outlook Argentina hasn’t had single-digit inflation in at least a decade. With close to 40 per cent of the population living below the poverty line, economists surveyed by the Central Bank predict inflation ending this year to reach around 73 per cent. The government’s efforts to tackle inflation have been damaged by imbalances in international prices aggravated by the ongoing war in Ukraine. As prices surge three-quarters of voters disapprove of the centre-left ruling Peronist government of President Alberto Fernandez.
Online Regulatory Update Overall there has been an expansion of the online betting market in Argentina. In May the province of Córdoba passed rules that give online casinos and sports betting the green light. Te bidding for at least ten permits will begin as soon as regulations are published. Both Argentine and foreign companies will be invited to take part in the tender while Te Córdoba Lottery will oversee online gaming once it is up and running.
New online rules will follow similar legislation now in place in the autonomous city of Buenos Aires and the province of Buenos Aires. Online gambling is also now present in Mendoza, Santa Fe, Corrientes, Chaco, Misiones, San Luis, Tucumán, Entre Ríos, La Pampa, Neuquén, Río Negro and Santa Cruz.
However President Alberto Fernández recently ordered an increase on the tax rate on online betting. Established in December 2016, through Law N° 27346 Te Indirect Tax on Online Betting imposes taxes on the online gambling sector, establishing a federal online gambling tax of 2 per cent rate on the gross value of each bet. Te tax was established throughout the country and applies to bets and or games of chance made in the country through any type of digital platform. Te law also gave the Executive branch the right to increase the tax rate by as much as 50 per cent, reduce it or temporarily leave it without effect.
In October 2020 Minister of Economy, Martín Guzmán, added provisions to the 2021 Budget to increase the federal tax on online gambling from 2 per cent to 5 per cent of the gross value of each transaction. Ten in 2021 the government created a new Online Control Registry of Betting in order to cover taxation over the industry further.
Te new tax ranges from 2.5 per cent to 15 per cent depending on a number of factors with operators facing heavier rates for having not complied with previous regulations. Meanwhile those companies that are already registered with the online gambling registry and have put local employees on the books will benefit from a lower rate.
