Bingo in the US is also seeing a transition online. Bingo is also extremely popular in Scandinavia especially Sweden and amongst younger players. Bingo has been popular in Latin America for many years where the stereotype of the typical bingo player has never really been appropriate in the first place. Instead, bingo has been associated with larger complexes which offer a wide variety of betting options.
In Chile, bingo halls are part of large scale casinos and hotels aimed at boosting tourism. Chile’s gaming law of 2006 ruled that casinos must be part of a four of five star hotels and that those casinos are part of a wider package

that would promote tourism in the area.
Bingo has a fairly strong presence in Colombia too, where licences to run bingo halls are granted in the same way that they are for slot parlours and casinos. Te vast majority of bingo halls are located in Bogota.
Te number of bingos more than trebled between 2002 to 2013 and continued to grow by 13 per cent from 21,400 in 2013 to 24,700 in 2014. In February 2020 there were 20,700 bingo seats nationwide. Due to Covid-19 land based bingo operators were even permitted to stream bingo draws online. Physical cards for the bingo scheme could be sold at home, at points of sale arranged by the operator or in establishments authorised by the gaming board.
In Mexico bingo halls, almost without exception, contain slot machines in the form of electronic bingo terminals and like sports books they are usually part of a larger gaming centres.
For a while bingo was extremely popular in Brazil too. In the 1990’s the traditional bingo halls could be quite lavish attracting a higher income clientele. Over time the look and feel of bingo halls became to look more and more like casinos although table gaming was not permitted. Unfortunately the bingo boom did not last long. In 1997 EGT’s were given the green light in slot machine parlours attached to bingo halls.
Over 900 bingo halls were soon operational nationwide with the vast majority of them located in Brazil’s most wealthy states. In 2000 it was discovered that bingo hall owners were trying to illegally bribe government officials to allow them to house more gaming
machines on their premises. Te federal government closed down entry to the bingo market and licences were eventually blocked from being renewed. All the same, bingo is still covered in a number of proposals on the table that would allow for a wider expansion of gambling in Brazil.
Although each jurisdictions offers its own distinct set of challenges, from a developer’s perspective Latin America has a lot to offer. But it’s not just Latin America. Bingo looks likely to expand globally. So how has bingo managed to remain popular for so long? What kinds of innovations are we seeing? We talked to some of the leading bingo operators and developers to find out more about what lies ahead.
