GAME DESIGN: ONLINE SLOTS BETSOFT GAMING

Anna, do you have a favourite comedic Betsoft slot game?

Return to Paris is one of Betsoft’s most successful comedy video slots. Released October 2021, it is a five reel, 20 payline slot that is loaded with features and frequent wins. Te narrative is a sequel to our earlier hit release, A Night in Paris, with the same characters – a caricature French Tief, complete with stripey jersey, swag bag and a taste for famous art, and a muscular Cop and his dog who are determined to put the Tief behind bars.

Te game is played as a chase around the Louvre in Paris. Each piece of stolen artwork has its own Multiplier - the more you recover of each symbol, the higher the Multiplier. It’s a race against time as the Tief must put the loot in the unique bar-counter under the grid and build up the Multipliers before the Cop catches up with him.

Te humour is in-built throughout the game: players start laughing as they start playing because each highly recognisable element is deliberately exaggerated. For example, the Mona Lisa Scatter has had some ‘cosmetic work’ courtesy of our fantastic animation talent and is certainly not enigmatic! She triggers the Free Spins round; as there is the potential for up to 1,000 Free Spins, you can see why she is laughing out loud.

Te atmospheric soundtrack, with its Parisian street music, sirens, explosions and humorous mutterings, reinforces the comedy theme fantastically well. Tere is something new to discover with every replay as the attention to detail is phenomenal. No wonder Return to Paris is currently nominated for Game Narrative of the Year.

Are there any other comedy themed slots that you would like to tell us about?

Betsoft is well known for its humorous approach to content and narrative across many themes and genres. For me, the laugh-out-loud releases would have to include the unique progression games Take the Bank and Take Santa’s Shop featuring cartoon robbers who are determined to blast their way to riches, and the magician-led release Stacked.

Stacked is a fantastically original card trick release packed with features, instant wins and free spins. Set in an old style theatre, the magician and his lovely assistant – a beady eyed chicken – invite players to pick the lucky cards alongside a soundtrack complete with applause and gasps from the audience. Humour and wit are woven throughout the game from the first spin to the spectacular Prism feature. Te detail in the design is incredible. Players are kept enthralled as the magician literally has more than one trick/feature up his sleeve!

Te ’Take’ games are a completely different style P26 WIRE / PULSE / INSIGHT / REPORTS

of slapstick comedy. With five reels and 75 paylines, they offer a unique spin Count Down before an explosion of features occur. Te humour is obvious from the characterisation and inherent in the details, such as the robbers’ cheeky winks, the evocative soundtrack and the visual gags that come as fast as the free spins. In Take Santa’s Shop, for example, the tree ornament is also the exploding bomb. Tese releases are instantly recognisable for anyone who enjoyed cartoons as a child – and most of us who still do.

One of our newest releases, Gemini Joker, which released in May 2022, uses more classical humour representation in the form of the joker - as found on playing cards. As an image, the joker or the jester is a clear symbol of entertainment and that really is the key. Ultimately, our success is predicated on the fact that we are continuously providing entertainment for our players.

Talk us through how comedy themes are incorporated into slot design and drive player engagement.

Successful releases entertain throughout the game. At Betsoft we hardwire the humour into the narrative and game structure to create a flow. We then use specifically chosen symbols and images to showcase the joke. Bolting on humour never works as it is too obvious and could even be irrelevant or visually distracting.

Good comedy requires good timing, so we mix the cartoon humour with medium to high
