ONLINE SCAMS - A GROWING PHENOMENON IN ARGENTINA Beyond match fixing illegal gambling continues to be a major problem especially when it occurs online. Police investigations, which have been ongoing in some cases for years, have been able to untangle the complex inner working of criminal gangs. Tese gangs are using increasingly sophisticated measures to scam players and launder money. In October, security forces carried out a series of raids in Argentina to dismantle an illegal gambling ring after a more than two year-long investigation. Security forces were able to identify a digital criminal organisation that involved attracting customers through a number of illegal online casino platforms. Te investigation culminated in the search of 53 properties in Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires province, and the province of San Luis. Te operation resulted in more than 20 arrests. Te operations


seized cell phones, computers, hardware, high-end vehicles, cash-both pesos and dollars-along with 12 kilos of drugs and firearms.

office which now focuses on cases related to gambling violations in the city of Buenos Aires. In March 2025 the Buenos Aires City courts ordered a massive blockade that included 72 illegal online gambling platforms. It was the largest since September, when another 237 illegal platforms were blocked. Te illegal online market dwarfs the legal market in Argentina.


In a recent article, and citing the latest data available, the newspaper reported that in 2023 the money spent through official channels totalled approximately $185bn. Tat is less than a third of what was transferred illegally. Illegal online gambling scams have spread all over the country. In June 2025 the province of Salta published its findings after
