Are You Watching This?! uses algorithms to analyse live game data and determine if games are exciting, identifying events like rivalries or upsets. Mark Phillip, CEO and Founder, explains the various online and retail applications to betting.


What was the inspiration behind Are You Watching Tis?


Sure, honestly a lot of it was selfishness. I'm a lifelong sports fan and hated the idea of waking up in the morning and finding out there was a great game the night before. It happened a few times throughout my life and the one I remember most clearly was in the summer of 2000. I had just moved to Austin, Texas from Brooklyn, New York, and the New York Jets were playing on Monday Night Football, and they were down by 30 points by the time I gave up on the game. I had been so excited about watching that I just went to bed early.


Te next morning, I found out they had this massive comeback that ended up being called the Monday Night Miracle - one of the biggest comebacks in the history of Monday Night Football and the NFL. But the idea of whether I could use code, tech, and community - some mix of the three - to guarantee I'm never the loser at the water cooler the next morning. In 2006 I was young and naive enough to quit my job and think it be an easy thing to tackle and 18 years later it's still my professional obsession.


What's the business model? 82


For a long time, I didn't make money! Tere were years of dark financial moments but to paint with a broad brush, generally Austin tech skews B2B. Tey're very different from the average San Francisco Bay Area company that tends to be more B2C. For us, the idea was that we need to license this to other companies. Starting in 2006/07, the dream was to get on a TiVo that could have this information allowing me to pay 99 cents to watch a game that I don't have access to or to record a game automatically. Of course, tech and viewing behaviour is much different now 18 years later but the original seed of the idea to license this out to have as much impact and leverage beyond a small B2C company.


Te business was around long before PASPA was repealed. How has the business adapted to the rollout of regulated sports betting?


When we first got started, licensing this made sense but it's hard getting those deals as a small one-man shop that was self-funded and couldn't find any investors that wanted to invest. And then when PASPA fell an important piece fell into place. Tere are always three things for us: curation, discovery, and monetisation. Curation is finding out which games are exciting. Discovery is how can I watch
