Just a few weeks after the Gauselmann Group won the bid in the tendering procedure to take over the WestSpiel Group and its casino operations in North Rhine-Westphalia, the family-owned corporate group entered the planning phase for a new casino location. Along with the sale of the four casinos in Aachen, Bad Oeyenhausen, Dortmund-Hohensyburg and Duisburg, all in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the state of NRW simultaneously issued licences for the operation of two new casino locations. Te company plans to open the first of these in Monheim am Rhein.
“During the tendering process for the casino concession, we already took a close look at possible additional casino locations and prepared extensive location and potential analyses,” explains Dieter Kuhlmann, Gauselmann Group Management Board member with responsibility for Gaming Operations. Considerations also took into account the politically and legally defined channelling mandate that is intended to ensure a safe and legally compliant environment for potential gamers. For this, it is absolutely essential to set
up the casinos at locations that are easily accessible for as many people as possible, Dieter Kuhlmann adds. “Te Monheim am Rhein location is ideal because it lies at the intersection of the transport routes between the major conurbations. Monheim am Rhein can be reached in as little as 30 minutes by car from Cologne and Düsseldorf, North Rhine- Westphalia’s most populous cities. We are confident that we have made a good choice with our new casino location.”
On a total area of around 4,300sq.m, gaming enthusiasts can expect to enjoy a wide range of games at the MERKUR Spielbank in Monheim am Rhein from the end of 2022. Te concept includes classic games such as roulette, blackjack and poker, combined with the latest generation of Gauselmann slots.
Te MERKUR Casino on the lower ground floor of the building will remain open, confirms Dieter Kuhlmann. “Experience at other locations has already shown that arcades and casinos are not in direct competition, but can operate successfully side-by-side.”
Greece Mohegan pulls the plug on Inspire Athens
Lithunania
Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment (MGE) has stepped away from Inspire Athens, the proposed casino development at the derelict Hellenikon international airport on Athens’ coast due to financial issues.
Te company has stated: “MGE has conducted a comprehensive review of its operations and future commitments against the new backdrop created by the COVID-19 global pandemic and concluded that we would not continue to pursue the concession rights for the Athens Project.
“We are also focused on the large undertaking at Inspire Korea, which will consume the next few years of development. While we know this is a disappointment to many, it is the right decision for our company and its stakeholders. Te company and GEK Terna coordinated the equity transfer with the requisite government officials in Greece,” the company added.
MGE transferred all of its ownership in the project to its Greek partner, GEK Terna, on October 22.
