Pragmatic Play: Studio With a View
Pragmatic Play recently rolled out two new Indian-themed live casino products - Andar Bahar and Roulette India. Contending that the strength of a content provider's portfolio is not just in the sheer number of games available but the quality and variety that is on offer, Julian Jarvis, CEO at Pragmatic Play, details why 'themed games' fit into the company's product strategy going forwards.
What’s the thinking behind the Indian theme?
We feel the Live Casino space has so much potential in terms of innovation and these products reflect that. With these titles, players can get the usual polished and high-quality Live Casino experience that comes with our games, along with the authentic feel of the Indian region.
Adding this theme gives another layer to an already strong product. Our classic Live Casino titles still perform very well and are a hit with players and operators alike, but we feel that new themes can build on this solid foundation. Of course, adding even more variance to our Live Casino portfolio outside of the ‘Vegas style’ games is a also factor in the creation of these games.
With regards to Indian themes specifically, the Indian culture itself is associated with vibrant colours and rich fabrics, and these elements combine well in a Live Casino setting to create an immersive experience.
Why Andar Bahar and Roulette India? What gaps do these two titles fill in Pragmatic’s live casino portfolio?
I wouldn’t say they fill gaps as such, but rather they build on what has already been a successful strategy of investing heavily into our Live Casino infrastructure. We’ve focused on

getting the fundamentals of our Live Casino correct through a state-of-the-art studio in Bucharest, extremely well-trained dealers, immersive game play with 4k cameras and much more.
Once these foundations are in place so to speak, we can develop more niche localised content that experiments with novel themes, which is what we have done with these titles. We judge the strength of our portfolio not only through the number of games but the quality and variety that we can offer, and Andar Bahar and Indian Roulette achieve this.
What type and depth of research goes into ‘themed’ games?
Quite a lot of research is required especially as it relates to colour schemes, dealer clothing and table layout. With Andar Bahar, we ensured dealers were totally clear on the correct terminology to be used in the game. At the first stages of creating a product like Andar Bahar, we make sure that everyone on our team from developers, dealers and photographers understand how the product works on a fundamental level.
Tis ensures that throughout the game development process there is total accuracy which results in a polished and most importantly authentic final product, to be enjoyed by players internationally.
What is the provenance of Andar Bahar and how have you paid this heritage homage in your version of the game?
Andar Bahar originated in Southern India and grew to be a hugely popular game across the whole country and beyond and we believe it will have international appeal. Te game itself has a relatively basic set up as it is established on probabilities of halves and is very easy to play.
Essentially, the best way we can pay homage to Andar Bahar is to deliver it accurately and professionally. Andar Bahar was played in person by Indian audiences, and the Live Dealer experience facilitates a similar sense of interaction. Low latency streaming is a priority for us, and this allows players to enjoy an interactive experience on any internet connection.
