(a) A compound noun is a noun made up of two or more existing words, e.g. cat food or playgroup. The German language is famous for its long compound nouns!
The gender (der, die, das) of the noun that comes last is the gender of the compound noun. For example: Schuh + Geschäft = Schuhgeschäft has the gender of its last compound. das Geschäft → das Schuhgeschäft
Looking at the table (d) on page 82, can you establish a pattern for nouns that end in –ung, -ie, -ei and –e?
