(a) Conjunctions are words that we use to connect parts of a sentence (clauses). In English, for example, we use words such as ‘and’, ‘because’, ‘but’, ‘if’, ‘for’ or ‘when’. A very common connecting word in German is ‘wenn’, meaning ‘if’ or ‘when’. ‘Wenn’ changes the word order of the clause coming after it. Study the three examples and try to work out the rule. 1. Ich habe Zeit. – Ich sehe fern, wenn ich Zeit habe. 2. Wir schreiben im Deutschunterricht einen Brief. – Ich mag es, wenn wir im Deutschunterricht einen Brief schreiben.
3. Du kommst ins Kino mit. – Sag es mir, wenn du ins Kino mitkommst. RULE:
‘Wenn’ makes the ______________ go to __________________ of the sentence.
(b) If you put ‘wenn’ at the beginning of the sentence, more changes happen. Study the five sentences and try to work out the rule. 1. Wenn ich Zeit habe, sehe ich fern. 2. Wenn ich in die Schule gehe, stehe ich früh auf. 3. Wenn ich keine Schule habe, schlafe ich lang. 4. Wenn die Sonne scheint, gehe ich schwimmen. 5. Wenn wir in Urlaub fahren, packen wir unsere Koffer.
RULE:
If you start a sentence with ‘wenn’, put the verb of the first clause ____________ the comma and the verb of the second clause ___________ the comma.
As a result, you get the following pattern: Wenn ... verb, verb …
