(a) The pronoun ‘man’ is used regularly in German. In fact, it is the 34th most common word in German! Study the sentence ‘Was kann man tun?’ and consider how you could translate it into English. Discuss this in groups and with your teacher.
(b) Go back to the reading texts on page 335 and find more examples of sentences with ‘man’ - Laura (x 3), Ben (x 1) Konrad (x 3). Write out the sentences and check that you understand what they mean.
(c) Match the German sentences with ‘man‘ to the correct English translation. 1. Man sieht sich. 2. Man weiß nie.
3. Man ist, was man isst. 4. Man lebt nur einmal. 5. Man tut, was man will.

(d) Translate the following English sentences into German using ‘man‘. Note that with ‘man‘ the possessive adjective ‘sein-‘ is used. For example: Man kann sich seine Familie nicht aussuchen. (You can’t choose your family.) 1. How do you say that in German? 2. You do what you can. 3. How do you spell that? 4. A person has to do their homework. 5. They say that German is easy. 6. What can we do in London?
