Dorchester
Tis ancient and modern county town has specialist gift shops and a plethora of places to eat and stay. An unexpected historical gem with dedicated museums and exhibitions for the Egyptian boy king Tutankhamun and the Terracotta Warriors. A statue of Tomas Hardy is in the town and there is a restaurant called Judge Jeffreys, with a macabre past. Te ‘Bloody Assizes’ were held at the Antelope Hotel, in the Oak Room, now a Tea Room.

Regiments of Devon and Dorset over three Centuries. Completed in 1879, it was designed to resemble a Norman Castle, and is built of Portland stone which gives it a white appearance.

An experience not to be missed! Wandering through the many rooms and the great hall at ATHELHAMPTON HOUSE it is easy to see how nobility lived. Go to the gallery to see examples of the work of the artist Marevna who lived at Athelhampton from 1948–1957. The West Wing houses a fine dining room, the Yellow Bedroom,State Bedroom, the Dressing Room and a Bathroom with a copper bath.
Visit the gardens for formal architecture, plant variety and woodland scenes. The Great Court, with its striking Pyramid shaped yew trees, is the most famous of the gardens. Beyond the Great Court, the Corona, the Private Garden, the Canal, and Octagonal Pond lead you through the gardens to the River Piddle which forms a natural boundary. The river walk takes you through natural areas, and round toward the ancient Dovecote. Visit the Topiary Restaurant to enjoy a meal, the Sunday Carvery is recommended!
