RUBY COUNTRY
Scuplture in Hatherleigh
The area covering both sides of the A3072 (Bude to Exeter road) and the hinterland of the Torridge area, Ruby Country has some of the darkest night skies in the UK. For a countryside holiday or DAY OUT, this is the place to be. The rural towns, quiet villages, winding lanes, rolling landscape, and easy access to nearby Dartmoor make this an ideal area for cycling, rambling, horse riding and fishing etc.
Holsworthy Around the traditional market town square, there are an inordinate number of eateries and pubs and just outside of the town is the regional livestock market. Near the main car park is a small museum full of local history. Worth visiting is the St Peter’s and St Paul’s church with interesting stained glass windows, some of which were made by WW2 Italian prisoners of war, and a 16th century granite tower. Tis town comes alive on market day (Wednesday), and is a great holiday destination to explore rural Devon, the northern coast of Devon and Cornwall, not too far away.
Shows and Festivals include the Holsworthy Stratton Agricultural show in August and the Holsworthy Amateur Teatrical Society shows, staged throughout the summer. Tere are also open days at the local Brewery and much more.
Hatherleigh Our last featured town has a small shopping area along a
narrow street. Busy on Tuesday market days, and well known for preserving Devon traditions with annual events that that have long been abandoned elsewhere. Te Flaming Tar Barrel runs, the Town Crier’s Contest and the Hatherleigh Carnival are fine examples. A monument honours William Morris, who led the 17th Lancers in the first line of the Charge of the Light Brigade, and the town’s Belvedere Tower provides views of twelve church spires in the neighbouring countryside. Starting at Hatherleigh and going on to Bideford and Barnstaple, the Tarka Trail follows an old railway line and is very popular for walking and cycling, being mainly hard- surfaced.
Winkleigh Tis little-known Devonian treasure, situated between Dartmoor and Exmoor, has several local amenities, a village hall and a sports centre. Tere are the famous Winkleigh Singers, the 750 year old Winkleigh Fair (held in the summer) and this is the only village in Devon with 12th century castle remains - two large historic mounds, and an airfield, which played an important role during World War II.
Iddesleigh Near Winkleigh, this peaceful village is home to the legendary War Horse story from which emanated the famous film. Being near Dartmoor, this is the perfect place to explore the north of the Moor, also due the proximity of the Tarka Trail it is great for walking and cycling. It is also the locale of the historic Duke Of York Inn.
With a restaurant renowned for generous portions of home cooked food, The DUKE OF YORK INN is a favourite meeting place for visitors, friends and
families. It was listed in the Good Pub Guide 2017, voted one of the top ten country pubs in the UK Good pub guide 2016, and one of the top five country pubs in the UK by Countryfile magazine! The Duke welcomes shooting and fishing parties with several good local shoots and excellent fishing at Stafford Moor and on the Taw and Torridge rivers. With two roaring inglenook fires and excellent real ales, The Duke pride itself on its CAMRA listing. The quaint dining room is great for a party and the cosy alcove is ideal for intimate diners. The Duke is proud to be associated with the ‘’War Horse’ story.
