Twomey says she is “rag- ing” that Midleton and Youghal were not added to the latest rent pressure

Spike Island To Push For Increased Funding

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

Spike Island is expected

to push for extra funding to develop the site, when management

meet with

tourism officials tomorrow (Friday 15 December). According to a County Council source, manage- ment on Spike Island are keen to secure extra fund- ing, to further develop the site ahead of their win at the International Tourism awards earlier this week. Phase two of the rede-

velopment of the Island was hamstrung when the Local Authority

were

turned down by the tour- ist body for grant aid of €7million. The fund was being sought to provide further exhibition areas, a visitor interpretive tourist

centre train and connecting

the pier to the fort. The Island was rated

the best island in the world on Monday last, achieving an International Travel Award in Vietnam. The 104 acre island lo-

cated in the centre of Cork Harbour

came second
