GAELSCOIL Mhai- nistir Na
Corann
were honoured and delighted to welcome PJ Lynch, Laureate na nÓg –award win- ning illustrator and author and Isaac O’ Connor to officially open Leabharlann Isaac on Thursday 7 December. Gaelscoil Mhainistir na
Corann welcomed pupils into the new school build- ing in September
2016.It is a joy to be in a bright, spacious, warm building. When planning, a room was set aside to be the school library. The piled boxes of books stood for- lorn in the empty room for the first term. Fiona Hill our wonderful secre- tary put systems in place so the books could be moved from the boxes to the shelving. Parents
from Cairde (PTA) took the first step and began the labelling and scan- ning. Thanks to parents, pupils from the Gaelscoil ,teachers and transition year pupils on work expe- rience over 3,800 books were
and placed on shelves. Over the
labelled, scanned past
few
years books have been squirreled away, books from the Scholastic Book Sales supplemented by donations and shopping
in charity shops. We are thrilled to see the shelves full and a lending system in operation. The library is an inviting, cheerful space, imaginatively and colourfully decorated by Múinteoir Cait and some of our artistic pupils from Rang 6, 2016/
2017.It is a place of refuge, re- laxation and a route to other worlds. The library is named Leabharlann Isaac. Isaac O’Connor is a past pupil who entered
a Specsavers Creative Writing competition and won. Part
of his prize
was €2,500 awarded to the school which was ear- marked for the library. A large image of Matilda is the latest addition to the school displayed out- side the library. She is an iconic emblem promot- ing reading. Despite the lack of encouragement Matilda was an avid reader. The children per- formed the show Matilda
last year and the book is a favourite with children and adults alike. Indeed to mark the
the children performed a song as Gaeilge
Matilda. Príomhoide
occasion from
Uí Fhloinn during pro- ceedings welcomed
Mairéad all
the children and guests and thanked all who were involved in making the library should a wonder- ful space . PJ Lynch and Isaac cut the ribbon and
PJ spoke to the children about his love of books, reading and illustrating. He also signed and left an illustration on the li- brary’s wall of fame “Clu agus Cáil”. The occasion finished with the children singing our own spe- cial”Amhrán na Scoile”. “Books give a soul to
the universe Wings to the mind Flight to the imagina-
tion And life to everything”
