East Cork Running Group Aim To Help The Homeless

by JORDAN MCCARTHY

A running group in Midleton,

organised

by Pat Walsh, is aim- ing to help the home- less this Christmas. Already, dozens of es-

sential items have been collected by Pat this week, who is hoping to improve the lives of those in need, during these bitterly cold months. He admits that while there is no easy fix for the homeless crisis, collections such as this can at least help in some way. ‘‘For the next week at

training (between now and Thursday 21 Decem- ber), I will take any do- nations of hats, scarves,

gloves, socks, and so on. They will get directly to where they are needed most. We will not change the social or political cri- ses that have led to this situation but, if we can just help keep the people warm, it would be some- thing,’’ Pat said. ‘‘I am delighted with

the response so far and I want to say thanks. A lad from Leevale AC drove down especially last Tuesday night to donate goods which he had col- lected. There are people from Midleton and Car- rigtwohill coming along to help out as well. ‘‘For those who would

like to help, I will be in the overflow car park of Market Green Midleton

(near Sam McCauley’s) Tuesdays and Wednes- days from 6.15pm - 6.30pm

or Thursdays

6.45pm - 7pm,’’ he add- ed.

Pat revealed that he

hopes to resume these collections of essential items for the homeless in the New Year, stating that ‘‘January and February are also cold months’’. He paid tribute to the in- credible work of ‘‘Fermoy Tuesday Night Homeless Run’’ - a group that, on Tuesday nights, meet out- side Brown Thomas in Cork City from 7 pm ’til 9pm. They set up a sta- tion with hot food, soup, drinks, dry clothing and provide

care packs, for the homeless.

Clock Gate Success Will Boost Youghal In The Long Run

by JORDAN MCCARTHY

Continued from front page The tour has proved

to be hugely popular, with both International visitors and Irish visi- tors. The story and how everything connects – one floor leads to the other – is what amazes the visitors.’’ Twelve

months on

from the official open- ing of the town’s most visible

landmark, it fair to assume that is the

facility has had a posi- tive impact on Youghal. Nearly 6,000 people have

visited the Clock

Gate. It’s also reported that an extra 13,000 peo- ple have passed through Youghal’s Visitor/Her- itage Centre in 2017, as a result of its marketing campaign. Murray be- lieves that the town will see even greater benefits emerge from the Clock Gate as a major visitor

centre, in the years to come.

‘‘Fáilte Ireland, under

the Ireland’s Ancient East brand, brought us a huge amount of famil- iarisation trips. These are made up of Internation- al

journalists and tour

operators. We won’t start to see the benefits of this for another couple of years, but it will all pay off in the long run. ‘‘We have also been

promoting and packag- ing different attractions in Youghal. Again, this is long-term planning but we are selling Youghal as a destination to get peo- ple to linger in the town and maybe have lunch. For example, tours of the Clock Gate, St Mary’s, the Town Walls and the tour of the town, and the boardwalk. We are not looking at the Clock Gate in isolation, but as an overall package.’’ Youghal Clock Gate was built way back in

Summer is the new Cin- ema and luxury apart- ments at the old site of the Loreto convent over- looking the sea. We have many new shops and boutiques set to open for the Summer, not to men- tion the vast array of Fes- tivals that run through- out the Summer season, including the Moby Dick festival, the Queen of the Sea festival and the Mackerel festival. But the highlight

of

Youghal thus far has been the

opening of

the Clock Gate . Inside you are told the origi- nal story of the jail as it was at the time. This is a unique tourist at- traction for our town as there are very few clock towers left standing and in such great condition. As

you are probably aware, Youghal was once

the home of Sir Walter Raleigh for sometime as well as the brutal on- slaught of Cromwell and it was also the 2nd

busiest

port in the British Isles at the time.

Our famous town crier

Cliff Winser, who came second in the Town Criers world champion- ships, gives a very inter- esting and informative incite

into the town’s

history during walking tours of the town. Youghal is also install- ing a new pontoon giv- ing a boost to the boat- ing industry. Fishing trips up the Blackwater or out to sea are a must for any tourist or if fishing is not your cup of tea, just re- lax on board and take in the beautiful surround- ings of the River Black- water and Youghal Bay. As a whole for Youghal

eastcorkjournal

and East Cork the out- look for 2018 is good. For us we are looking towards 2019 when the Perks family will cele- brate 90 years in show business. We are preparing for

a whopper of a celebra- tion that will be second to none and will be pre- senting special events in 2018 in the lead up to it. For
