Get On Your Running Shoes For Glenbower Woods This Christmas
by JORDAN MCCARTHY
Whether you get dis-
gruntled with the mince pies and selection boxes, need to clear the head or just feel like helping out your community, then the ‘Glenbower Woods Fun Run’ could be just the im- mediate workout
post-Christmas that you need.
There are now less than two weeks to go until the run, which takes place in the woodland of Glen- bower,
in Killeagh, two
days after Christmas. Organised by Glenbow-
er Wood and Lake Ltd, the event is being held on Wednesday 27 December at 12 noon. It will feature a 6km route for runners and walkers, as well as a short- er 2.5km route, geared towards families and kids. This is the second year of the Christmastime event,
which was initially held two years ago. Entry for the run/walk costs €10 per
person,
and it is €20 for a fami- ly. Registration is on the day of the event. There will also be light refresh- ments served afterwards. All funds raised are
aid of the upkeep of the area, and in particular for the reinstatement of the wooden bridge. Speaking to the East
Cork Journal, Richard Lynch, from the organis- ing committee said; ‘‘this event is designed to get lo- cals stretching the legs af- ter Christmas. The wood is owned by the commu- nity, the committee look after it. People of all abil- ities use it to run or walk. A bridge in the wood has given way, so this is a fund- raiser to repair that also. All people have to do is show up on the day.’’

New Car Park In Cloyne Officially Opened
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
The new car park at
River Street Cloyne was officially opened on Tues- day 12 December, provid- ing 16 car parking spaces. East Cork Municipality
in
Chairwoman Councillor Susan McCarthy officiat- ed at the opening, mark- ing the completion of a €62,500 village
renewal
project. The Municipality
Chairwoman was joined with members of the Cloyne Community Coun- cil at the official opening. The new arrangement
means that the new park- ing deck further enhances the village’s overall parking capacity. For many years the en- to
trance
River Street was blighted with derelict
Cloyne along houses on
both sides of the road. Over time these proper- ties were acquired by Cork
County Council and de- molished. The Cloyne District
Community Council cre- ated a community garden on the western side of the street adjacent to the for- mer National School with the remaining part of the site being used as a tempo- rary unsurfaced car park. On the other side of the
road the GAA developed a fine new facility including accommodating a play- ground provided by the Cloyne District Communi- ty Council. Cork County Council
created a relief road con- necting River Street with the R629 east of the town centre and this created the opportunity for residential development of the ad- joining “backlands”. The surfacing and lin- the car park, and
ing of
providing drainage and kerbing, further enhances this approach to Cloyne and completes many years
of hard work and improve- ments by Cloyne and Dis- trict Community Council in partnership with Cork County Council and oth- ers.
Cllr McCarthy said Cork County Council,
through the East Cork Municipal District, were pleased to support Cloyne and District Community Council’s work on behalf of the community in fund- ing completion of the car park and other enhance-
ments through planters, heritage
information sig-
nage, bins and painting of premises in acknowledge- ment of their community involvement and commit- ment in Cloyne over many years.
